Hey all,
I posted a pic last week of the Kamei race MK1, and it got me thinking. I use my Rabbit as my "fun" car; tooling around, the occasional auto-X, and running the 1/4 mile (not that I'm any good at it).
I figure while i'm relatively young, I might as well have a street race car. By this I mean one seat, no interior, no dash, and only the bare minimum to keep street legality. I'd need to keep wipers, lights, and not much else.
Could you guys post some pictures of any Mk1 that are set up like this? I'm looking for ideas for fuse box location, what to do with the sheetmetal once the car is stripped, roll cage, and some sort of removable heater core. I know it will take some engineering, but I'd like to get some ideas to start with. If you have ideas, I'd love to hear them as well.
Thanks,
Pat

My 84 Bunny isn't completely stripped, but I have no back seat, sound deadening material, HVAC, ect. Pretty much all that is inside is half of the dash(mostly cut out), driver and passenger seats, carpeting(gotta keep a little heat in), roll cage, and the headliner. The car is pretty cold in the morning, but once it runss a bit the heat from the engine statrs to make it throught the fire wall and takes the edge off of the coldness.
To remain legal I think all you need is wipers, lights, bumpers, speedo, and restraints. Your DMV will be able to tell you what is required in your state.

Just do what I did no heat , no AC, no headliner, no carpet and sound deadening, race seat and belt, no stereo, and the dash only weighs like 8lbs so I would keep it in good to have a glove box and the like. Use the jetta 1 dash it is lighter than a US Rabbit dash. Next up is a roll cage.

i kept my heater because of weather conditions here in the NE. sometimes heat is needed to defrost. keep the dash, it doenst really weigh enough to make a huge diference and it makes it look a lot better when you get pulled over.
Part of the reason I want to do this is for the full racecar look. I know that sounds stupid, but this is probably my last chance to do so before I have to grow up.
I want it to look like this:
Do you guys think there is any way I could keep heat in something like this? I'm sure it would look like crap, but as long as I could defog my windows,, I'd be happy.

Well just keep a rag in your car. I do not drive my Rabbit in snow or rain. You do not have to grow up your toys just get more expensive, dangerous, and complex.

I think that would work. I could probably convince a friend to make an aluminum box that could house both the gauges and the heater system that would look a lot cleaner than the factory stuff.
Is the heater core flow completely shut off by the valve in the engine bay?

Because I already have the car built. 2035 16V done up, coil-overs along with the usual suspension stuff, Individual throttle bodies with SDS waiting in my garage for a nice day, and transmission work. Plus, the body's in near perfect shape. No rust, two dings, so I really don't fancy starting all over.

Wacky wabbit racer's wabbit is pretty sweet...you could always race prep it to the bone like that and leave JUST the dash(with the uneeded materials pulled)....then youd have the heating amenities you need!
Its a cool piece, built in adjustable rev limiter, fuel safety features and the ability to dial in the nitrous oxide whenever you want and how much. Its a cool unit. I am going to not be using it anymore as I am now sponsored by MSD and I am using their DIS-4 and crank fired ignition. So its up for sale along with the Jacobs ICE Pak.
A "race" interior is quite spartan in most cases with every noise heard due to no sound deadening, and this type of interior would probably drive me crazy in a street car. After a weekend of racing, I enjoy getting into my '95 Golf Sport with creature comforts of a good CD player and peace & quiet. But if you want the "race" interior, here is a pic of my race Wabbit interior. Regards, WWR.
