Are you certain it is the "neutral safety switch?" It sounds to me like it could be the brakelight switch, which is under your dash near your pedals. It is a somewhat common problem on MKIV's. VgRt6 has a DIY on replacing it- let me dig it up for you. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

tried this fix, didn't help. dealer ran a diagnostic, wants $475 to fix, and swears it is the safety switch solenoid, which explains why cold makes it worse. i'm not convinced. thanks for the link to the brake switch repair.

Hmm... that's odd. I'm sorry I can't be of much more help.

Hi,
I've got a 5 speed GTI myself, but the exact same thing happended to my mother's 2000 Jetta automatic (2.0 liter) just 2 weeks ago. The dealer replaced the shifter solenoid with total labor charge for 1 1/2 hours, and about $200 CDN for the solenoid, total charge just under $400 CDN. Your quote seems a bit high in comparison.
I actually talked to the mechanic (took it in as a favour to my mom), who said that it's a rather painful job, and that her solenoid looked corroded as if maybe someone had spilled a drink into the shifter console

Hope this helps.

does that mean that solenoid is in the shifter console?
