I just picked up my 03 GTI from the service department at Roseville Volkswagen and I was talking to a service manager about some of the work they had performed when I noticed that the rear brakes were down to 7mm. I have read on this board before that rear brakes do go out faster than the fronts (1/2 life left ar 18000 miles nevertheless surprises me) so I was not totally caught off guard and I decided to ask this guy how much a rear brake job would cost me. He informed me that it would be about $360 seeing as how I have to replace the rotors also. Replace the rotors?! His response was that Volkswagen only makes rotors with enough material on them to last through one set of brake pads and when you replace the pads you have to change the rotors too! Now I am no car expert but i have done several brake jobs before and this sounds absolutly rediculous! Please someone tell me this guy is as crazy as I think he is.

Re: New brakes=New rotors? (03GTI4Me)

yeah, he's right in that VW rotors are very thin and cannot be resurfaced. But there's no way in hell it should cost $360. at the dealership, sure, but you could do the job yourself for $150 tops. Get some OE replacement rotors at autozone, checker, kragen, NAPA, some pads, and you're good to go.

I couldn't say it better myself. I went with the same setup from ECS and I am extremely happy. Front and rear rotors, with pads, and it was about 350 shipped. It's a super easy job too. Took about 2 - 3 hours. If you need help, let me know, I'm only about an hour away from Sac.

Re: New brakes=New rotors? (03GTI4Me)

Why turn the rotors? I found Honda rotors would warp in less than 60K miles if they were ever turned, so I just quit turning them. My last set lasted 120,000 miles.
I don't ever see a need to turn a rotor. If it's warped, replace it. If it's not warped, wait until it does...
New pads may take a wee bit longer to seat on an unturned rotor, but they will.

it's more of an issue of getting the pads to bed right, as well as getting rid of cementite and other deposits on the surface of a true rotor, which can cause some shaking.

Re: New brakes=New rotors? (protijy337)

Thanks for the info on this everyone. When it gets to the point where I need to do the brakes, I will definetly uprade and do it myself. The CAD route looks promising. I will bookmark the link, thanks. Brake rotors that wont last past ~50k is still amazing to me though...

We're not talking about Honda here.
If you do choose to reuse the rotors (then again....rotors are cheap anyway), take some fine grit sand paper to sand the rotor surface in small circular strokes. The tiny grooving as a result will help bed the rotors.
Rotors for the MKIV (minus the 20AE, 337, & R32) are cheap for basic rotors

Re: New brakes=New rotors? (r03)

I did my rear brakes @ 35k for the first time, cost me $68 + tax from Roseville VW. Auburn VW would have cost less but I was in a bind on a weekend so had to get them quick. I did NOT replace the rotors and the car drives fine. In general, rear brakes go first and the rotors should be replaced every other brake pad replacement. My Acura GSR rear brakes wore down after only 20k miles. The front rotors on my Jetta look brand new at 40k miles.
Total cost for rear brake job and 45 minutes of my time...$68 plus tax.
Knowing I didn't get ripped of by the dealership...priceless.
