New Civic SI v. GTI

Just read an article in MT on the new Civic SI. Looks like the GTI would kick its ass. The civic is 160HP and has no torque. The interior is kind of funky as well with a dash mounted 5spd stick. Did anyone else see this article and what do you think?

Nothing special...I like the old '99-00 Sis much better. Better design and of course, Electron Blue Pearl kicks mucho azz. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

We'll have to wait and see. Dont take it for granted when it arrives. You know honda will put out a quality product. Plus the dash mount shifter is pretty neat.
Re: New Civic SI v. GTI (Sg4227)

That shifter makes the center console look like it's got a stiffy...
Re: New Civic SI v. GTI (Sg4227)

its not really a fair comparison... but when i think GTI i think modded form...

Didnt see the article, but I saw the car in person at a show. That thing is ugly IMO. Plus, that color is just nasty!
Re: New Civic SI v. GTI (GTIrob01)

If it would cost as much as the GTi, it's a pretty bad choice.. but it will likely have a 15k invoice like the previous Si.. and 160 hp in a light hatch isn't all that bad, for such a low price.. would be decent for auto-X. Problem with a honda 4-banger being a street car is that for a street car the only thing that matters is flatness and elevation of the torque curve.. you seldom rev above 5,000 rpm on the street. And problem with any N/A VVT-4banger being a drag racing car, is that there's only so much tuning you can do before you have to resort to forced induction.. that's why the 1.8T's are so nifty, you can just turn up the boost and cut few seconds off the 1/4 mile time. As for the VR6 you can make the camming more aggressive, add a free flowing exhaust system, remap fuel management, etc.. -- all the things which are already done on the Civic and made more streetable using VVT in order to get the rather amazing 100 hp / liter ratio. And yeah, the 99 Civic Si looked a lot better, and Electron Blue (Blue Lagoon-like color) rocked.

The 02 Si at the SF intl auto shot in all its glory, er...lack of glory. I dont know, it may look alright with some 18s and a subtle body kit, mabye. Im a Honda fan, but seriously they need to lose this Si crap and bring the CTR over.

The Old si has around the same amount of horse power as the new one if im correct. If it is close to that you GTI 1.8t's might have a little comp after you. Vr6 will kill it no matter what. We will have to see!
Re: New Civic SI v. GTI (tcrboravr6)

Honda designers have taken up smoking crack I see. I actually liked the old Si but that thing is fugly!

Re: New Civic SI v. GTI (Levish)

that new Civic Si look like sh*t that shifter looks like a schwantz and the car looks like a minivan that got lowered, nice color in the pics tho, i like that,i'm not saying that cuz its a honda, the shifter is completely in the wrong place and i hope it doesn't work, just to teach those bastards at honda that some things should be left as is
Re: New Civic SI v. GTI (Tornado Red 1.8T)

i used to like the si a lot....im trying not to let that article , and what i saw ruin what it has become for me....but i just dont know if i can deal with that shifter man.... i mean, i dont want to have someone in my car go to change the station and put me in reverse or somethin
Re: New Civic SI v. GTI (98vwgti)

Let me say this. my friend has a 2000 Si R and its an unbelievable nice car, its got a lot of nice things, I still rather take a VR6, but still I dont like when ppl say poop about it, because it has power and style, yes some people overdue it and make it look like poop, but there is a lot of ppl that make there VW look like poop too, and if nicely done BEUTIFUL! but this new civic... Its just simply ugly this model and last years hatchback is horrible... like it looks like a minivan... So only honda's I like are the 2000 Si, SiR (2 door red, or blue) and the hatchback before those models.
What im trying to say is. Even if this is a little more powerful, its not all about power, you gotta pimp in style too! not in a mini , MiniVan
Re: New Civic SI v. GTI (strlen)

The new Civic Si isn't the lightweight hatch we once knew. 2,744lbs. is the new curb weight. Lighter than the GTI, but certainly not as light as it's previous hatch (2,388lbs.) Hmmm, no torque, same horsepower and more weight! So what's the deal Honda????

Oh really? Hmm.. that's still not too slow, but definately not anything like a 2002 gti 1.8t (or AWW ones), or the older Si.

There was a 5-picture, two page (well... really about 30 lines, but...) article on the 2002 Si on page 70 of the Fall 2001 edition of Honda Tuning. To be honest, the inside looks much better then the outside... Celica-esque sport seats which look to be covered in a Integra Type-R-like suede with red stitching. The three-spoke steering wheel is very similar to that of the Audi A4's sport wheel. Although shaped differently, it is the prime item of the interior's sportiness. The exterior is a look only a mother could love, but as with many other cars (e.g. PT Cruiser, 2004 GTI) will just take time to get used to.
I am not a Honda fan, to say the least, but have to give it to them they have added a lot to attempt to make the eye-sore of a Civic they have now more appealing to folks like us who like the euro-style and speed.
I will try to scan the article for you guys, but, like many others, I have no idea how to get the image in a message... Any instructions anywhere? The articles pictures of the interior are much nicer, and make the car looks slightly more appealing, although certainly no VW.

Re: New Civic SI v. GTI (JWHITE)

I agree, I think the new Si is ugly. I've read a little about it and it sounds quick, the handling sounds good, but I could never buy one because it is so wierd looking and the shifter is so wierd. I heard Honda's goal was to make the shifter more like a rally car but I think they are shooting themselves in the foot on this one. I don't think the public will like it. http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif I haven't seen a Si in person but I have a feeling the build quality of GTI interior is a lot better too.
