Just received my magazine tonight, and I always like to hear affirmations of how great our vehicles are! They panned the average acceleration and harsh ride of the a4. The article stated that the Passat V6 (2001.5) and new Toyota Camry were better, but of course they put more emphasis on comfort and convenience over performance and style.
Re: New Consumer Reports stated V6 Passat better than new 3.0 A4 (hejl)
That's complete crap, the 2002 A4 I have is friggen great. My GF just got a 02 4motion passat and I still like my A4 better. I'm not calling the kettle black or anything, just my 0.02. As far as the ride is concerned, without the sports package the A4 rides really really smoothly. I have the sports package on mine and it is a little rougher than the stock none sports. Fir me though, I would rather have a car that handles well. The regular setup seemed a little mushy to me, but not a mushy as the passat's. When I testdrove the passat I thought the car dove into corners a bit, and didn't handle as well.
We're all still family though!!
I think the most interesting bit out of that article was the following:
quote:

The Acura 3.2TL was last redesigned for 1999 but was upgraded in the spring of 2001. We bought the sportier Type-S version with a 260-hp, 3.2-liter V6. The TL is the quickest of the group, yet it still attains the best fuel economy. The spacious interior is well laid out and nicely finished. Handling is good in normal conditions but can be tricky at the limits. The ride is a little jittery. Reliability has been excellent. The TL Type-S starts at $31,230 and comes well equipped. Adding a navigation system and destination charges brought our final sticker price to $33,710. The CR Wholesale Price is $29,619.

It was the quickest, most fuel efficient, and cheapest of the group. No, I'm not going to run out and get one, but that is impressive nonetheless.

I agree. I also prefer a firmer, tighter car -- or would if I had to have only one car. But in my garage I also have an S2000, and the Passat is the perfect daily driver for me. It rolls a bit in corners, but rides beautifully (especially on long trips). The Audi front end gives great steering feel without any torque steer, while making the Passat seem like a much more expensive car. Not to mention that a lot of stuff fits in the back of it. When I want to hit the twists, I just change cars.
But if I had to limit myself to one car, the Passat would be too soft. I'd get an A4 or a 3-series wagon.
PS: This is a great site -- lots of car enthusiasts and hardly any flaming.

Moonturban,
I agree, the new A4 is pretty damn slick. The build quality is better than either the Camry or Ssat. In addition besided for Audi's reluctance to include a real LCD screen with the GPS option, it has more options than either of these cars.
The Passat and Camry represent great values. Not that the A4 doesn't , in my mind, however the Passat/Camry price point is more Consumer Reports friendly.
I like the Audi, but for the next couple of years, my Passat will suffice.
Re: New Consumer Reports stated V6 Passat better than new 3.0 A4 (lip)
To be fair, Consumer Reports does not consider price or value in its 'rating'. In fact, their highest rated cars of all time are the Mercedes E-class and BMW 5-series (hardly cheap, but they are awesome).
