Can we play a bit and try to find alternatives to this Tuareg / Touareg problem-name? Let's see....They wanted something with regards to an entity with a wild spirit, desert-creature, etc.. I am positive many of you already have tens of other names for the VW SUV.. Below are only a few that crossed my mind this morning...The list is open.

VW vehicle names typically suck. C'mon, rabbit, Golf, and what the heck is a Bora? They should stick to numbers or letters like Audi & BMW.
But I do like Gobi. Definitely makes one think off-road. Tuareq doesn't mean anything to me. Perhaps they should name it Turaeq (or Gobi) in Europe and keep the Colorado name in the US.

Colorado is already booked by GM or Ford, I am not sure. But they can always find something else. Different names in different continents is not a new ideea for them. Speaking about numbers instead of names...The whole VW concept is about names, popularity, memorability, friendliness...Numbers/ letters that's for premium class: see Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Volvo, Lexus, you name it...

Yes, the next mid-size chevrolet pickup will be named Colorado. Full-size is already Silverado.
As for our unknown Tuareg...
it seems like the project is dead now so if it ever rises...
call it Lazarus! get it? haha, LOL
or maybe phoenix... as in risen from the ashes.
Although Cayenne isn't any good either IMO. Hot Cayenne pepper? Are they serious at Porsche? They need a number like 489or.

Don't know where Rabbit came from, but the most are winds:
Scirocco - hot dry, dusty wind off the Sahara over the Adriiatic and Aegean seas
Bora - cold north/northeast wind over the Adriatic sea
Golf (Gulf in German) - Gulf stream winds from the south-west
Passat - A general term of steady winds which blow from the Subtropical High Pressure Systems to the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone ( the Tropical Trough) AKA the Trade Winds
Jetta - the jet stream (winds over 57mph more than 20,000 feet up)
Corrado - believe to be Spanish for the jet stream winds
Vento - Italian for northerly morning wind

Too darned bad GM's going to be remaiming their crummy light pickup the Colorado. The Volkswagen Colorado would fly in the States much better than the Volkswagen Touareg. But, then, the Porsche Cayenne's name doesn't befit a Porsche either, but that doesn't mean it's not going to blow us away. I'm sure if it's called Touareg Stateside we'll get used to the name. Just as we're used to Rabbit, Jetta, and Passat.

How about we name it after a hot desert wind? We could call it the "Santa Ana". No, thats to LA.

Hmmmmmmmmmm.....
Or we could name it after a hot wind. How about "Chinook"? No, sounds to fishy.

"Touareg" sounds too much like a body function. VW effed up that one.
Chinook actually sounds pretty good.

The more I think about the Chinook name, the more I like it. Look at the pic up at the top of this page and say, Chinook and see how well it seems to fit the look. Just a little fishy though.

As well as being a hot wind as are Passat and Scirocco, Chinnok is also a type of Salmon.

Twa-regg - it's not the easiest of names, but then people have trouble pronouncing Porsche correctly

I wouldn't go for 'Chinook' coz that's a helicopter in most people's minds.

Does anyone know what a TWOWREG is? I'm affraid 12 year old boys might refer to it as the VW "Tow Wreck"

I think it looks like a Lemming. The new VW Lemming!!!! Yeah, that't it!
Lemming totally fits the styling, (They resemble hamsters) the "me too, gotta have an SUV, cuz everyone else does" sort of mentality.
Why would anybody want a Passat wagon anymore when for $10 k more, they could get a smaller heavier car that gets 15 mpg and tips over on turns?
[How about we call it the....EOEHASUVSWHTMOT?] = "Every One Else Has An SUV So We Have To Make One Too".

Anyone else second Lemming?

The name Gobi makes the car sound small... about the size of a Lupo...
perhaps because it makes me think of a gogomobile (think it's spelled correctly)...

On anohter note... Volkswagen stole the "BORA" name. There is a nice little Maserati by that name from quite a while back.Guess VW couldn't think of anything new and original for that one huh

Touareg is a term applied loosely to a group of Saharan nomad tribes, much like the Bedouin. (Which is actually sort of a cool name.) Personally, I don't mind it, but I think there are cooler names out there. Too bad cool names like Explorer, Navigator, Mountaineer, Colorado, Denali, and Tahoe are all already plastered all over mediocre pieces of #@$#@! produced by mediocre American car companies.

Well first off, anyone who doesn't know that the Bora name was used by Maserati cannot call himself a car enthusiast.
Secondly, VW did not "steal" the Bora name. They paid Maserati for the rights to the Bora name.
