Put a remanufactered started in my '92 VR6 C this weekend to try to solve an occasional no crank problem. Now it won't crank at all. I do hear the solenoid click (so it's not the ignition switch) but no engine turn over. I'm thinking the flywheel teeth are not meshing with the new starter and need moving a bit (by rocking the car while in gear). Will try tonight. Maybe the battery cables are too old/corroded so I'm not getting full volts at the starter? Maybe I have flywheel tooth missing?
All clues greatfully appreciated.

Re: New Starter, still no start! (tornado)

Bump.
Mine doesnt start either. Just makes a buzzing noise, seems to be coming from right behind the defrost/fog light switch. Sometimes it buzzes, other times it starts right up. Buzzing noise isnt ignition switch. Is there some electrical dodad in there between ignition switch and starter solenoid??

Fixed!

After trying various things to fix the no-crank issue, including replacing the man battery leads to the block and starter terminal lug, I un-installed the starter and bench tested it. Well, after 3 solenoid clicks, it finally started to run. I replaced it back into the tranny and the car fired right up! I guess it was just stuck.
BTW, I disagree with the comment "click or no click, definitately the ignition switch"...is the switch ain't working, then no power to cause the click. There is a relay between the switch and the solenoid I believe, so that may be at fault, but I could hear the solenoid click, so it was getting power.

Re: Fixed! (90corrado_g60)

try hitting the starter with a hammer, if it cranks it over after that, it is the starter.
I tried like 4 or 5 things. I did the push button starter, new batt cables, new batt. hitting the sheet out of the starter......
the funny thing is that once i changed the cables, it seemed to fix the problem.
I hooked a cont......ity tester up to it many ways cranking, radio on, radio unhooked, from starter...and so on. I did have a bit of a draw when the face plate on the radio was pushed in. Now i run no radio and starts everytime..

Re: Fixed! (90corrado_g60)

Actually, it's quite straightforward to replace the starter...just put a jack under the oil pan to support the engine since two of the 3 bolts holding the front engine mount have to be removed to pull the starter. Disconnect the battery FIRST since you'll need to be unbolting the "HOT" nut from the starter terminal in tight spaces...don't need to risk shorting the battery. Also disconnect the solenoid plug. Then just remove the two big bolts holding the starter to the block. You'll need socket extenders and the lower bolts if best reached from under the car, so a raised front end is best.
I managed to get the starter out by carefully working it along the tranny face and down & out past the front cross member. This was made harder on my car because I have an oil cooler with big thick hoses running along that same area.
