Only two months after selling my 92 Jetta, I jumped into another Vdub, the elusive Quantum Syncro wagon. I have been searching for one for three years. I know very little about these cars as of now, so any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks all-

First things first.... you should get the European headlights. They also have an integrated fog light so you would probably need a foglight switch as well. Note that your car is essentially an Audi 4000 Quattro wagon. The front suspension stuff and driveline is compatible, however the rear semi-independent stuff is not. Note also that if you have money and patience the 20VT from a '91 200Q will make an excellent engine swap with 400hp easily obtainable...
Great car, take care of it.

A Quantum what ?

Congradulations, do you know if the diffs are working . Usually if the lights illuminate when you pull the knob they are working. If not channces are its a vacuum leak. Secondly keep an eye on the cooling system they are marginal. The gauge "may" appear to be hot but anywhere from halfway to 3/4 on the gauge is "normal". If your fan shrouds are missing ( they direct cool air to the radiator) consider making new ones. The factory ones were made of cardboard. I used old pickup mudflaps and zip ties. I'm not scaring you am I ?

I disagree with Syncronicity, I would get the Santana lights, they look the same style as the US lights but are Euros. I think the Euro Passats lights are not as nice for the B2s.
Finally, enjoy the ride and bookmark this site. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/syncronized

Re: New Syncro Wagon owner! (mans442)

Thank you all for the insight and information. Anyone know how to properly engage the 4WD? It has a two-stage pull lever, and I'm not sure what each stage is. Also, how do I interpret the VIN? WVWHB033XHE099735.
Thanks again-

Re: New Syncro Wagon owner! (mans442)

Its always engaged.
The first pull locks the center differential, it disengages automatically at 40 or so on my car. The center diff. splits the torque 50/50 front and rear when locked. The upper light should illuminate on the little pictogram. With the second pull you also lock the rear differential. According to the manual , you should only use it if you are stuck and at low speeds. I have never needed/used it. The second light on the lower part of the pictogram should light up.
You will have to ask someone else for a VIN website link. I do know that the first letter 'W' is for Wolfsburg ( made there).

Open your hood, remove the rain tray , the speedo cable passes through the firewall by the brake booster . There will be a black box connected to the speedo cable , on it is a white button . Simply press the button with a ball point pen until it clicks, it is now reset.

Re: New Syncro Wagon owner! (Harold)

I had one , then sold it.....stupid. One other nice thing, which makes it better than the AUDI 4000 Quattro are the wheels. They are 4x100, while the AUDI is 4x108. SO you have a great selection of wheels.
ALso it the diffs don't work check for vacuum leaks (prev post), also if it shifts hard get red-line mtl or what they reccomend for the tranny. You never want to lock both diffs unless you are stuck, this mode makes your car go straight as three wheels are locked (both rears!).

Re: New Syncro Wagon owner! (bdsxxx)

My biggest concern about the car are the nuisance things, like both power window motors in the front are broken. I would prefer to go to crank, but I'm not sure if the door interiors are the same. Considering the $399 Maaco paint special...
Thanks

Re: New Syncro Wagon owner! (mans442)

Are you sure that the motors are broken ? Both times that mine have not worked it was not the motor. Once it was the switch. The second time window would go down but not up on the passenger front side. It turned out to be a break in the wiring that runs through the drivers side door, it seems that the motor receives power through two sources.
If you go to the junkyard and see power window switches that "click" nicely pick them up as spares. The A2 Jettas are the same ones.

I know the driver side motor is toast. The passenger side may need to be re-connected. Could I get a motor from an A2 Jetta and install it in my Quantum?

I'm not sure if it would work , I'm assuming that the parts are different. I tried looking up both parts on http://www.vwparts.com to check the part #s and they are different.
There is a Quantum in a junkyard near me in Manchester, NH. However the problem would be if the parts work and getting them to you. If you want to discuss this further e-mail me at HaroldM[email protected] .

Re: New Syncro Wagon owner! (Harold)

Thanks again Harold-
Manchester is no more of a 1 1/2 drive for me on a clear Saturday morning. If you do find useful parts there, let me know. I would prefer to put a crank window set-up in the door, but a working power window motor assy would be great. I'd like some different front seats as well. The previous owner/driver was a 300 lb lady, therefore I can barely clear the steering wheel while driving.
