i have this model kit! its a mkII "Tuning Version" kit from Revell. the pieces come in white, with an "optional" zender-type body kit. it's weird coz it comes with the dual rounds with the gti 16v badge, but the motor that comes with it is an old cis 8valve.
i haven't gotten close to that pic, but i've painted mine alpine white, with the black interior.
it comes with 2 sets of rims; steelies and some wird looking hub caps. i'm trying to customize it to have a drop, and try to get it as close as i can make it look like my mkII

but it's either the stock us small bumpers, or the ugly zender looking kit.
i'll post my own pics once i get more stuff painted

i highly doubt that many pieces come in that kit, how big was the box? really who is really going to put piston rings on a model car?

That is NOT a model kit, it is a real dissasembled car. If you look closely every nut and bolt is visible in that pic.
The model kit you speak of is nowhere near the quality of a real gti. Check out the model/diecast forum for proof. I have seen some model kits out there made by fujimi, (enthusiast series) where there are almost as many parts as that though.

I have that Revell model, still in the box and that picture is not of that kit, that kit is nowere near that detailed, it's 1/24 scale. Thats a picture of a Golf, it was a poster that a lot of dealers had back in the day.
