Re: no A/C ??? (pre 93 only)

well you can do a 3 different things to remove your a/c..
1. you can go to a steelership and get the non a/c bracket
2. you can get a 8 valve alternator pulley and a longer belt, and keep your alt where it is
3. or you can remove your a/c bracket and grind down the spot where the a/c was to fit the alternator
4. enjoy the extra revvvvvvvs

Re: no A/C ??? (breandan)

Both RPI and Denon, have a Non A/C bracket that they have made... it a pretty nice quality piece... Cheap compared to the dealer's bracket... Plus you get pulley and belt... and can remove that heavy-ass bracket... they want like $199 for the kit, but can probably work you a cheaper price if you're good... HTH!

i took it all off and put on the ac stuff when i put the engine in the first time.
this time im pulling the ac. i think im going to have to get creative because i don't know what is supposed to drive my power steering.

quote:

if i get the non-ac bracket from the dealership what belt do i use??

you need to get the non-ac belt, and pulley as well.. all available from the dealer.. OUCH!!!!

As for driving the power steering after removing the a/c compressor, I can't recall off the top of my head, but doesn't the p/s get driven from the crank? or is it by the a/c comp.? Either way, there are factory parts to have no a/c & power steering.. good luck!

You don't need to buy a thing if you modify your stock bracket

grind down the non belt side so that the bracket is skinny enough that the alternator will fit on.
Grind down above where the alternator will sit so there will be room when you tension the belt (or cut it off all together)
get a chunk of metal if your old alternator standoff was too short and cut it out (mine is crude, I need to make another one)

Re: no A/C ??? (88Jetta)

On my 16v Scirocco engine I hack-sawe off the top 30% or so of the brackett, moved the alt down 1 notch, replaced its pulley with the 8v alt pulley I no longer needed (engine swap) and the extra 1/2 inch or so that it extended the alt shaft lined up w/ the water pump and crank. Actually it pushes it out about 1/8 or 1/4 to far. There is a star shaped washer/shim under that pulley though that when removed will take car of that I think. I used one of the 2 original belts from the same 16v motor. Forget which. I was suprised how easy...well "non-technical" any way. The top alt adjust arm (tensioner) I flipped upside down to clear it's tip from the alt blades. Boy is it close though.... May grind it down a little.

Re: no A/C ??? (Indiana Red)

I just took out the AC system from the firewall forward two days ago. The condenser was a bit hard to get off.
Playing with the alternator in both positions, I found that just leaving it in the stock position will be much easier. I bought the 8v pulley to help line it up. Now I just need to measure the length of belt I need using a string.
The only problem with this is that you still have all of the heavy bracket. But no need to grind or cut, just buy a belt and pulley. If you want to be up and going fast (and cheap!), this is what I would recommend. You can always spend money for the non-AC bracket or do some grinding work later.
Another point: If you plan to race in any Production Class events, the scrutineer might say something about moving the alternator, but I doubt it. The ClubRally rules state that you can remove the AC, but the battery and alternator have to remain in the stock locations. That would be a very anal scrutineer.

Re: no A/C ??? (smash929)

i really wish someone would start archiving these threads, because i'm getting sick of typing this sh1t out.
not sure on the PN, but it's from any A2 8v car. if you leave the alternator where it is you'll need a 45 in belt (gates 7445 works). also if/when you get the pulley from the junkyard, grab the spacer that sits behind it as well. if you have PS just using the pulley without another spacer won't line it up properly.
also, if you have PS, when you put the alternator where the AC compressor used to be, the stock pulley setup will NOT line up. mine didn't, i suspect i'll have to play with pulleys and spacers. i think the best length belt for this setup would be 38 in. i personally plan on getting rid of the PS pump and getting all the pulleys from a non-AC rabbit. one belt. no issues, no idler pulleys.

Re: no A/C ??? (duff_man2000)

[QUOTEthere should be a bracket out there w/o a/c and w/ p/s.....part #'s???
the brackets that Denon and RPI have made for them, come in both "with" or "without" power steering... not to mention the correct pulley and belt... worth checkin' out... these canadians obviously wanted the same thing we all do (NO A/C) and priced the parts thru VW, and realized that's not realistic with the upgrade.. ($400 + for parts, for more of an unnecessary repair) this kit is well priced, below $200... not to mention you save the weight of that heavy cast bracket... anyway, good luck.. c-ya!
