I have no illumination on climate control - fan - direction selector controls. Is this one bulb or three tiny bulbs & how do i access these bulbs. Also, since I just bought this car, I'm unsure weather the ashtray & 12 volt area should be illuminated? Thanks

Ashtray and 12volt should both be lighted. Mine goes out all the time, but then I tap on the side and it comes on. Mine is just shorted though.

I have the same problems, all HVAC controls the cig lighter and ash tray. I chalk mine up to MK3 wiring gremlins. Should be easy fixes once you get into it. A multimeter should be one of the main tools in a VW toolbox.
Fixing this is a low priority for me, going faster is the high priority.

most likely the bulb inbehind that illuminates the hvac controls.
