I have a problem. My fox has no power. I can get it started with no problems. When I try to drive it, it has no power. I can barely get up hills. I can creep along in first gear. When you try to accelerate, there is now power, it boggs down. I have a new fuel pump, filter and fuel accumulator. I pulled the cat already. Very clean. Can see light through it. Should I check the coil? How? Distributor? I cleaned the throttle body. Checked the vaccum lines. New cap and rotor, plugs, wires are fairly new. It is not getting fuel or air or enough spark. Help please.

Re: No power (vgolfw95)

When I bought my first A1 gti I was a little disappointed in how fast it was. Then I changed the timing belt and saw that it was a tooth off on the cam. The first time I took it out I was amazed at how different the car was. I could spin the wheels through the first two gears and could step on it in fifth and still have considerable acceleration.

I know you said you can see light through your cat, but I had the same problem on my fox (I miss that car, sort of). Does the cat "rattle" when you have it off? The innards of my cat had worked loose, but I could still "see through it" at the proper angle. But, when I shook it, I could hear rattle (not just thunk thunk, but real rattle).
I knocked the insides out of a cat, and power was restored. I never determined if it was "just me", but I always thought it sounded kind of hollow after that.
It sounds like you've checked everything, but if you get your cat off again, you might want to shake it. Hope you get it figured out.

Re: No power (hammlm)

No rattle. The cat looked pretty clean. I actually knocked it on the floor a little to see if anything came out. It seems very sound. I replaced the wires tonight along with the air filter. Same thing. I actually loosed up the distributor and played around a little. Made a difference. I got it running good enough to get to the gas station. After going about a mile, I was running out of power again. Very confused. I think I am going to let the professionals look at it. If anyone has any further advise, let me have it.

Check your coil and all the electrical connections associated with it. Maybe even borrow a coil from a car that runs perfect, just to make sure it isn't the coil.
I really should know this, but is the car CIS or Digifant?

Re: No power (white rabbit)

Pull your injectors out and unscrew them from the line and spray carb cleaner with the little red straw on it, stick the straw into the back of the injector(it fits perfectly) and spray, while spraying take something small(very small flathead screw driver) and open the end of the injector so that the cleaner will flow through. then install them back in.
I dunno if Fox's have a primer pump under the floater in the tank, but if it does, that is more than likely your problem. It would be either under the back seat or in the trunk. access by 3 screws then twist the pump/floater out. The way you can tell if you have the pump is if it has 2 hoses hooked to it. If it doesn't have the hoses, do not proceed with this operation.
OK, I just checked...You do have an in tank pump! start with that and pull it out and test it with some wire to the pos and neg to see if it runs. If not, there you go! A new one is usually around $20-35 depending on where you shop.

Re: No power (G60Turbolet)

this should be pretty simple
1- check the timing. mechanical and ignition. make sure distributor is lined up and in the right direction. make sure all your 0 marks are inline. make sure each of your plugs have spark.
2- check for vacuum leaks. check all vacuum hoses, throttle body and fuel injectors.
3- fuel pressure. replace your fuel filter and run pressure checks on your fuel system.
4- from here you're into the big time. compression checks and leak-downs...

Re: No power (PDX Cabby)

Just so you know, I already changed the transfer pump, main pump, fuel accumulator. I even replaced the gas tank(bad leak). Of course, the filter as well. I am going to pull the injectors now. Thanks.

Re: No power (A1speedracer)

I have been on both forums. I bought the Fox to keep my Golf off the road in the winter. I went past the point of no return fixing it. I have driven a fox in top condition, all 81 horsepower worth. I just want it to run right so I can use it. Probably sell it in the spring/summer.

Re: No power (Frank Lee)

Frank,
that is not nice!! Foxes are VW's, too!!!! Kind of like a red-headed stepchild, but that's despite the point.
Oh, and to swell the heads, A1 forum is the place to get tech questions answered, especially CIS-E. Or the getting more common every day "how will 20 inch rims look on my fill iin the blank VW, I've noticed. I hope the purists haven't left, tired of that kind of talk....

Re: No power (92foxrox)

your problem sounds like you have a fuel pressure or flow problem because it idles good but under load it bogs, check pressure, and since you installed new filter and pump, check if you have the fuel lines intact, maybe you installed the fuel lines kinked or bent or something, also I had a new fuel pump before being defective but the only way to find out is checking pressure.
