1983 GTI just sold for $33000!

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1983-volkswagen-rabbit-3/

Who says MK1s aren't worth anything?

Since BaT seems to be the hot online auction spot these days, let's keep this thread going by posting your finds here so the Vortex community can stay informed on what's available and what cars are selling for.

This looked to be a very nice, mostly original car. Not too easy to stumble across anymore.

That said, I think there have been nicer examples go for a lot less. Heck, the "Ultimate GTI" may be able to be purchased for this same money.

Regardless, hopefully the new owner will enjoy the car and maintain and use it accordingly.

I guess my GTI may be worth a bit more than I thought too ;)

That's BaT for you. Sometimes really nice cars go for insane money. Modded cars are often hit or miss.
I go there for the information in the comments which is still useful, especially for cars sold back in their earlier days.

wow, 33k is crazy, I was approached by a guy at a local car show, he told me he has an all original white 82 gti with only 50,000 Kilometers (Canadian) car and hes thinking about letting it go. He told me his number would be around 15k Cad, maybe a worth while investment...

that car went up between 2 people that had a hot nut for it. that was the moon and stars for that car.

chassis was poorly detailed imho and that valve cover? they couldn't walnut blast and paint it? overall a clean pretty unmolested example, but the valve cover and the crack when you touch it expansion tank bug me.

really makes me wonder what I could get for my 80k sharTTruck with a 1.8t and a/c.

Just wait for Canadacraig's car to go up. Euro-spec Canadian import early GTI with a (n easily removable) turbo kit.

The OP car hammer price is just insanity, but I'm very happy for the seller. Although in fairness I am also extremely surprised BAT was willing to go so high on the reserve. I don't think any Mk1s have gone over $20k have they?

[ETA] Be honest, how many of you took part in the auction, commenting or bidding? br070, is that you Briano? Do mdc993 or KSP888 lurk (or even post) amongst us?

If it isn't already five figures, you certainly should.

Trade you for my Caddy any day. I'll need to clean it up and perfect it a bit to be worthy, but the offer is open. 😉

Thanks for the shout out thegave 👍. My car is a Canadian spec car, not euro, different engine the main thing. I’ve dressed mine up euro style with the bumpers and A pillar fairings though. It should be up on BaT in 2-3 weeks so keep an eye open or even bid!

Here is a link to my thread showing most of the stuff i’ve Done over the years

Love to take it to the next level but already bought my dream car so, c’est la vie!!

Here's another notable Mk1 BAT auction for the exact opposite reason, can anyone explain the discrepancy? I feel like that car might have gone for more just through private sale given the low number of prior owners and desirable color combination.

Having trouble with the link. 1984 GTI though, right? Maybe deleted? Keeps rerouting me to a generic BaT page.

Point taken though. I think that building interest outside of BaT is probably key to getting a bidding war going for maximum yield.

Regardless, (make no mistake); in reference to the 33K GTI high mark; to quote Reagan quoting Kennedy: "A rising tide lifts all boats". Welcome to the new paradigm.
