Ok ladies and gentlemen, my car IS a lemon, but I don't know what to do. The guys at my dealership are great and very accomodating to my minor mods, but this is getting rediculous and I don't know how to approach this situation. I'm going to start off by listing all things that were replaced since I bought my car on November 21, 2000 -
-The Glove compartment door
-THe seatbelt plastic hinge
-The stem for the window washers
-Both Cams
-Upper Intake Manifold
-Lower Intake Manifold
-all 6 lifters
-the turn signal
-4 rattles have been fixed
-two window regulators
-a synchromesh
-A key fob that broke for no reason
-The Center armrest storage compartment
-The whole door lock mechanism
Now here on my ongoing problems:
-The turn signal keeps blowing for no reason
-The Climatronic Always switches to celcius for no damn reason
-The Trip computer just dies occasionally
-The turn signals blink too fast
-I think the MAF is on its last breath
-My car gets stuck in 3rd gear for no apparent reason when I'm driving and I have to pull over and turn off the engine just to disengage it
-The door handle on the passenger side needs to be pulled HARD just to open
-THe engine is rattling and clanking again from time to time
-It makes a whirring noise which sounds like the alternator is about to die
Keep in mind that my car has 16,000 miles on it and it's been in the shop for 35 days total. I drive sort of hard, but nothing extreme. I still am on stock tires and brakes and have plenty of miles before I need to replace either of them. Once again, I am friends with some of the guys at the dealership (Liberty VW in Illinois) and they are really great guys at a really great dealership and have given me every benefit of the doubt on everything. I feel bad trying to get a lemon law thing, but can't be paying for this once warranty is up. What do you guys think?

Re: Now I'm REALLY angry... (VarLordahl)

So sorry to hear this. Not sure I know what to say....
But I would Lemon Law it, at least try.... it has nothing really to do with dealer... Cars can just have lots of problems....

Also call VW Customer Care... and explain the problems and Id follow it with a certified letter. VW does help with things that are out of warranty case by case.... so start making it known to them personally that there are some BIG issues.

Re: Now I'm REALLY angry... (VarLordahl)

Oh, I'm as a bright as a dark cave today. I forgot to tell why I am really angry. I went home for college over thanksgiving break (230 miles to home) and then drove another 35 miles to my dealership to get the turn signal replaced. I told them it was electrical, and not a bad turn signal, but they insisted on replacing the turn signal and charging me 50$ to do it(Which is the fair price). This was 3 days ago and IT JUST BLEW OUT AGAIN. Now I have to go all the way back to get it done under the parts' warranty

Re: Now I'm REALLY angry... (VarLordahl)

Sorry if my anger is getting the best of me here but........DAMMIT! HOW HARD IS IT TO PRODUCE PARTS THAT WORK CORRECTLY???!?!!!! I was just reading down about guys that had 6 and 10 window regulators break. UNBELIEVEABLE. IT IS A SMALL PLASTIC PART. MY DAD MANUFACTERS SIMILAR PARTS IN HIS COMPANY. He laughed when I told him about this and said "ALL THEY HAVE TO DO IS CHANGE TO A STRONGER PLASTIC COMPOUND." So I said that maybe they were using the strongest they could find, and he laughed and told me that for just as cheap as any other plastics there is some out there that is almost as strong as metal. All they'd need to do is just change the compound. UN-FRICKIN-BELEIVABLE.

Man, sorry about all the problems you're having. My 2000 GTI VR6 has been giving me headaches as well. At 20K the check engine light came on. After the dealer reset the light, the emmisions light came on at 25K. The dealer said there was no problem and reset the light. Now at 40Kall the warning lights are on and I've experienced a very noticable drop in power. I decided to take the car to an indie specialist where it has been for the last week. The lead mechanic I spoke to said he sees tons of VW with all sorts of problems, especially after 40K. He told me to sell the car, noting that the engines are generally good, but everything else on them is crap. I love my cars but don't want to deal wit h niggling problems that should not occur on a new GERMAN car. Interestingly, my 200 Jetta VR6 only broke its window braket and cup holder but then again, it only has 20K on it.
Let me know what you've uncovered on your end.
Best,
Robert

Re: Now I'm REALLY angry... (VarLordahl)

My 2002 VR6 GTI needed the motor replaced at 198 miles on the odometer! When I picked it up I drove it one mile from the dealership and the clutch pedal lost pressure and stayed on the floor so it was back to the VW garage for a new master cylinder for the clutch! After alot of stressfull phone calls to VW Customer service they agreed to replace my car and I'm now waiting on my replacement (3-4 week wait).
Alot of guys on Vortex view these complaints as whinning but the truth of the matter is I think there are some Lemons coming out of the plant and if nobody complains then be prepared to get one yourself. If customers wouldn't hold companies responsible we would all be driving Pinto-esq cars!
My dealer has been great through this whole process and the clutch problem had nothing to do with the new motor installation.

that sucks but that happens...I would contact anyone involved with your state's lemon laws and contact VWoA and if your dealer is helpful use them, tell them you will buy your new car through them and they should try to help you with vwoa. If they don't help you then you still have those first two options. You really shouldn't have let this buildup for so long.
Just so you know...I have not had any real problems with my car so I don't know why you had such bad luck.

First, I think you need to pull out the paperwork that came with your car and check the specifics of the Illinois Lemon Law. In Georgia, you only have 12 months or 12,000 miles (whichever comes first) to invoke the Lemon Law. According to your post, you are over on both accounts.
Second, I seem to recall that you have done a fair amount of modifying with aftermarket parts. This may make things a little more difficult. While your local dealer may be cool about it, the area service rep may not be.
Third, I also recall that a fair number of your list of repaired items was because of your own actions that resulted in damage to the car. While it is irritating to have to replace those items, it is not fair to blame them on the car. Chances are that any car you drive would have had similar damage.
If I were in your position, I would schedule an appointment with your local service advisor to express your concerns regarding the long term dependability of this car. See where that gets you (odds are probably nowhere, but you need to follow the chain). If you are not satisfied, speak with your salesman, the sales manager or the owner of the dealership. If you still have concerns, ask to speak to the area service rep.
In all cases, do not be confrontational, or you won't get anywhere. Try to explore options for buy back, or favorable trade value on a new one, or an extended warranty.

That's true, but then again, my car hasn't had any problems so far. (knocking on the wood), and I have it for 1 year already and 17,000 miles.

FOR CHRIST SAKE. Pedrosport, read my follow up posts. It wasn't the engine after all that was making the noise, it was the intake manifold. That's how I got everything covered under warranty with a chip. Grrrrrrrr..............

Re: Now I'm REALLY angry... (VarLordahl)

hmm...since it's still under warranty, why would they charge you $50 to fix something?
it's not like you want to add something you didn't have before.
it just sounds weird to me.
that's also one reason, i haven't modded anything.
i don't want them to think anything break is related to the mods.
good luck.
if the lemon law still apply, i think you should try to get a new car.
who knows what's going to happen next, maybe your tranny is going to blow over.

Re: Now I'm REALLY angry... (ultimaniac)

Man i sorry to here about all the problems with your car. I guess i've been lucky with my 2000 Jetta the only three problems i've had the little light on the bottom of the drivers door the red lens fell off, then on the right side one of the control arms stripped and was rattling, and the worst problem the air conditioning doesn't work very well it takes for ever to get cold, took it back to the dealer for a checkup on it and they said "after 45 min's it's very cold" I drive 10-15 miles to work so what's the point of having air!!!! anyone having the same problem with the air???? so far no problems with the power windows yet
