I recently took my 95' 2.0 aba golf with OBD 1 to my local vw shop to run a scan. We first tried to use VAG software hooked to a pc, the result (unable to connect). We then tried a hand held VAG scanner and recived the same unable to connect error. I have a different radio but have been told this does not apply to my 95'. Any idea's would be great!

The aftermarket radio issue should not apply to your car, that's right - but there can also be other things that can result in a similar situation. So do the aftermarket radio check and see what you come up with (short to ground or plus?).
