WRONG. mine is OBDII and does NOT have an air pump, there are a lot of people without air pumps and OBD II.
The best way to tell is to look at your throttle body. If it has an arm type thing across the top its obd I

Mines OBD-2 also and mine never came with an air pump...the mounts are there, but not pump. The obvious clue is the throttle body. OBD-1 cars have a flatter throttle body and the OBD-2 cars have a taller throttle body.

Wait then Why does mine have an air pump? You said only NJ and Cal. cars have them?? Mine was originally bought in Penn. I am the second owner. If they all dont have them....... can I just take mine off?? I thought that all OBDII cars had them 96.5-99 even some of the intake companies ask if its OBDII to figure out if you need the breather filter fo it. Do I lose performance from having it??

Some of the cars were built as they say California legal no matter where they were sold. I am not positive, but I think you will throw a CEL if you remove it. There is really no drain on the engine with it, so I can't see if affecting performance any.

If you really want to know, read the emissions sticker under the hood, it will say OBDI or OBDII certified. Also most 96.5 and up are OBDII I believe.

I've heard that cars with cold weather packages have air pumps. CNY_VDUB, does your car have heated seats or any cold weather package? That might give a clue what VW was thinking why it arbitrarily gives some cars air pumps and others don't...

Mine does not have heated seats, I have the basic GL, power locks, sunroof, AC, Premium audio tape, arse veloir seats, rear defrost, etc. Maybe it is a cold state kind of thing. If I could I would run out and check other's dubs, but alas.... I am the only VW where I live.

My car is is OBD II and has an air pump. I'm the 3rd owner and the car was original sold in Conneticut and doesn't have a cold weather package. Also I have disconnected the air pump and forgot to plug it in and it never pulled a CEL.

I guess it must depend on how much tequila they had the night before in Puebla or what parts were available. Otherwise there seems to be no rhyme or reason which cars get pumps and which don't.
