I know that I can read the MIL codes without a scanner but what are your experiences with VAG-COM? I am thinking about purchasing one in the near future for my 1994 Jetta (OBD I). Thanks
Bently manual explains how to get the codes without a scanner but you can't monitor anything real time. All you can do without the scanner/software is listen to the ECU, you can't tell it what to do. I want the ECU to be my b1tch not the other way around
I have a VAG-COM and I love it. Have not registered it yet to take full advantage of its functions, but it is well worth it. There is a Yahoo! Group for it at groups.yahoo.com/group/VAG-COM and the writer of the software Uwe Ross is always there helping with questions.
Edit: Fixed Link
I have a generic OBD II scantool that has more than paid for itself. It will read/reset codes, and do live monitoring, but not all the VW specific stuff the VAG-COM does. As soon as I get a job, I think I will be getting one.
