No... I went on line and reguested the striped fabric for a 83 vw gti. They sent a little sample, I called, they had a record of what I wanted and ordered. I paid $89/yard.

SMS waitlist is active.

I just got off the phone with SMS and I am on the waitlist for the blue fabric. They indicated it would be several months and be about $100 a yard if anyone else is still looking.

Regards,

John

The material looked new. Almost everything else in that place is worn from 20 years of kids running amuck. I almost asked one of the employees for some information about it.

Pretty cool, even though we all know blue is the better color

Sms fabric does not like gti guys!

Following your recommendation, I contacted Doug of SMS Fabric in 16 February 2016. Since then I have exchanged about 10 emails with them and they were always giving me a glimpse of hope that they will soon re-fabricate one. In my last email I cited their unprofessional attitude and they replied:
"Since I have no money or order from you, I’m not sure what you’re talking about here (THEY HAVE NEVER EVER ASKED ME FOR A DEPOSIT IN ORDER TO START PRODUCTION). I run a business that helps folks restore cars. If you have a better source of material for your old car, then I suggest you go there and buy the material (NICE ATTITUDE!). I will offer the reproduction of the material when I feel it is ready for the marketplace—and not before (I HAVE 10 EMAILS CONFIRMING THAT EVERY TIME THEY WERE LETTING ME HOPE THAT SOON THEY WILL PRODUCE IT. THEY HAVE NEVER TOLD ME TO WAIT FOR OTHERS TO JOIN THE PARTY). There is nothing unprofessional in this approach. If you don’t feel comfortable with my “incompetence”, then you should go find someone more competent to make this product for you. And if there are more of you GTI guys with this same attitude, I may just stop working on a reproduction altogether. (GTI GUYS? DO WE STINK?) I really don’t like this type of vicious attack from someone who isn’t even a customer (NOT VICIOUS. JUST QUESTIONED THEIR UNPROFESSIONAL BEHAVIOUR OF DELAYING ME IN ORDER TO GET MORE CLIENTS ON THE BOAT WITHOUT LETTING ME KNOW ABOUT IT). I have lots of reproduction fabrics that I can work on.(HAVE MANY OTHER CLIENTS SO DOES NOT NEED THE GOLF GTI MK1 ONES!--NICE ONE!) Why subject myself to this? Doug

I believe that we are enough VW fanatics so to find another company specialising in our fabric needs. If ever someone has a suggestion please let me know. ([email protected])

Thanks,
Antonis

I can confirm that SMS had this fabric in blue. As far as I can tell, what they had is an original roll, not a repo. And yes, it's wide and has two stripes on it.

I got the last two yards of what SMS had after Derek Spratt bought what he needed.

I don't think there's any need for open hostility in the manner we are seeing. SMS is a business and is expected to cater to big enough markets to justify a large run of any given material.

The number of GTIs that remain in original enough condition to justify new OEM cloth is tiny. Of those, the number of owners willing to pony up the cash to secure that cloth, then have an interior shop make the covers, is even tinier. It is obvious that no company will even blink at the "opportunity" to serve this miniscule niche, especially if we behave like divas. One look at the cloth and it's clear that making it from scratch would be an involved process that would be profitable only if vast amounts of it are sold, or a tiny amount is offered at unrealistic prices.

The fact that SMS even had a dialog at all was more than I would have expected. I would've expected nothing more than "Nope, sorry, ran out of that. Keep an eye out on our website, sometimes we stumble onto more of it. Have a nice day".

I went round and round with SMS. They sent me several samples for my blue interior GTI and all the samples were incorrect. They were dark blue with red stripes, but that was it. The fabric all lacked the light blue transition color. I eventually sourced some NOS material, so I got lucky, but as far as SMS goes I wouldn't hold my breath.

I uncovered the story of this fabric being in this helicopter.
Spoke at length today with a gentleman who owns a trim shop in Stockton. He knew exactly what I was talking about when I mentioned the helicopter at the children's museum. It was done in the late 90's by his former business partner. the remaining fabric was most likely destroyed when the body shop it was stored in caught fire around 1999. Sad to hear about the fire and destroyed fabric, but the search continues.

That's awesome that someone other than a museum employee knew the history on it. I'm just glad it wasn't the much more desirable, much more beautiful blue fabric that went up in flames.

I'm more interested in why the helicopter owner chose that fabric, to begin with.

Did the trimmer have that detail?
