Hey all you do-it-yourselfers,
I changed the oil and oil filter on my Jetta tonight (99 A4 GLS VR6), and I want to verify the amount of oil I put in - I check the tech specs in the back of the VWoA manual, and it said oil capacity: 7.5 qts, so that's what I put in. Think that's a bit high though, the dipstick is reading over the 'fill to' line.
Any confirmation from the Bentley manual owners?
(hopefully I'm getting mine for christmas
)
Thanks,
Jeremy

Re: Oil capacity (Boostin20v)

Yes, way too much! VW site says 4.6 quarts.
Drain some of it before you drive it.

Re: Oil capacity (keycom)

They say fill to 4 quarts. Then start car, turn off. Check level and add by .1 increments until it is right. I heard it is around 4.3 quarts, but either way it is not over 5!!!

Re: Oil capacity (Boostin20v)

gotta remember, this is a VR6 we're talking about here.
On my 84 Scirocco, I have to put in 5.7 quarts when I replace the oil filter ( I _do_ have the bentley for that), and that's a 1.8L 4 banger

Re: Oil capacity (Mister G)

And now to fess up.
I actually consulted the bentley for the scirocco, and I was off by a quart, which would make sense.
On the jetta, it turns out that I was about 3/4 of a quart over (didn't put that full 7.5 qt in there, thank god). It has the _correct_ amount in there now.
I'm just glad you folks are nice enough to tell me what a doof I am

Thanks again
