Oil Catch Can or JAZ mini breather???

922 Views 12 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  quickhuh
I just came across an old archived posting that shows someone using a JAZ mini breather as an oil catch can. It appears to only be connect to the valve cover outlet and not back into the intake tube. Any thoughts on this? This is metered air as the inlet to the intake tube is post MAF.
I was planning on installing a more standard oil catch can with the inlet coming from the valve cover and the outlet from the can going back into the intake tube. But this mini breather looks nice and small.
Love to hear from you experienced vr guys on this...I believe you ran this on your vr BillyVR6

i am going to be running the same thing this weekend also

Which the Jaz?
I like it, just not sure on the set-up of it. The pics of it show two fittings which I am asusming are inlet and outlet. The question is
if you hook this up using the inlet and outlet wouldn't it be pulling
in fresh air thrpugh that filter which would be un-metered?

The answer to your question is yes. If you use a vented catch can such as the Jaz, you must use it as an "output only" catch can by plugging one of the fittings. In addition, you must plug the now-unused fitting on the air intake boot (where the PCV hose used to go).

I was hoping you would respond as I saw your name in a post about the Jaz breather.
So you run this set-up? No problems then?
What did you use to plug the intake tube hole?

I run this set up without any problems, although I have a VF-Engineering S/C kit, so my intake piping is different than stock.
The VF intake has a male fitting that plugs directly into the 3/4" PCV return hose. To plug the fitting, I clamped a 2" piece of 3/4" hose onto the fitting and plugged the hose with a 1/2" barbed plug (available in the plumbing department of most hardware stores). I don't know whether this will work with the stock intake tube, but hopefully you can adapt the basic concept.
Finally, be aware that using a vented catch can eliminates the "crankcase scavenging" effect of the stock PCV system, and this theoretically robs you of some top-end power. For me, however, the benefit of not having to replace my oil-fouled MAF sensor on a regular basis (a common problem with VF S/C kits) far outweighs any small top-end power loss.

Thanks for the info. It's much appreciated.
Since you have a S/C I don't think you'll be missing any of this scavenging affect. I would question how much it would even matter
on an NA set up.
Anyhow, thanks again.

Hey, glad to help. Let us know how it works out.
i bought an ebay catch can, but the fitting were like 3/8 and i found them to be too little so i bought some 3/4 barbed 90 degree fittings. now i need to tap the can and install the can.
I'm doing this because of the massive blowby that my engine has. it was puking oil all over the maf and the TB.
Re: (hotshotz16v)

I will also be doing mine this weekend to since I finally have a day off in about a year
