Re: Oil cooler (ACKTung)

heh heh...ACKtung. Nice name. You go to the island much?
And yes, we do have a factor oil cooler. I don't know how well it works though. More to heat the oil up at startup because the coolant heats up faster.

Re: Oil cooler (SingleSpeed)

I looked on ETKA and the extra cooler on the VR6 is on the same side as the 1.8T runs the IC. The water jacket cooler that we have is not very effective when you're running more than 200 hp.

Re: Oil cooler (GolfikT)

The BMP part is cheap and will not give you any drop in temp (hard for a heatsink to work in a hot engine bay).
The stock oil to water cooler is a cooler but not a great one. Anyone that drives their car with enthusiasm should consider an external multi-row oil cooler like the one 9VW23yrs mentions. It makes more sense than a $130 BOV

Re: Oil cooler (GolfikT)

I spent several hours searching last night. Only ND and Autotech offer a kit. The ND looks better in size, location and price than the Autotech. Making my own with I could see online will be about the same $$. I really liked the Setrab 7-1/2x8 inch coolers.

Re: Oil cooler (MRP2001GTi)

Good point of the oil temp gage. But I will still put on a oil cooler, can't hurt my K04, and will keep the oil from getting so black! When I upgraded the oil cooler on my BAE/Callaway GTI it kept the oil from getting black.

Go every year for the last 11 yrs....love it. Shhh dont tell anyone....it's gettin more and more crowded every year...

Yeah, tell me about it. A good (and obviously very rich) friend of mine owns a house on Orange street right in town. I go there sometimes in the summer (my folks live in Falmouth across the water) and it gets pretty crowded. Kind of expensive too...the only ATM I've ever see that gives out 50s (not 20s) is there. The "other" island there is even worse. It's like friggin Coney Island.
Anyway, back to the topic...I don't have a gauge, but I bet a synthetic Xw-40 oil can take just about anything the 1.8T can dish out in terms of temps.

Re: Oil cooler (mityVR6)

quote:

The small radiator on the right side of Mk4 VR6 cars is NOT an oil sooler. It is an auxillary radiator for the water cooling system. Check a Bentley if you don't believe me.

When did I say anything about a VR6 or an oil cooler that looks like a little radiator? The stock oil cooler/oil heater, on the 1.8T at least, is built into the oil filter mount. It circulates coolant through a jacket that surrounds the oil as it enters and leaves the filter.
