I just changed my oil. I used a genuine VW filter. I seated the filter in the plastic threaded base securely. I replaced the circular black gasket at the top of the plastic base, above the threads. I made sure to coat the gasket with oil for a good seal. Oil is DUMPING out of the gasket. There seems to be pressure that is allowing it to leak. What did I do wrong? It seems if you overtighten the base, the gasket binds and slips out of the proper seating. If you don't tighten it enough, it leaks as well. Did I put the gasket in wrong? Or do I need to really crank it down tighter? I have had no luck. Any insight would greatly be appreciated. Thank you in advance for helping me.

Re: Oil leak around filter gasket on a 98' VW GTI VR6- Please help me!!!!! (sbiggi)

perhaps the canister was cross-thread when you put it in, look at all the threads and make sure they aren't damaged. If they are, you'll probably have to buy a new canister. Could be the wrong filter too

There are 2 different oil filters from the dealer.....'95 was a split year for the VR. I have an early '95 so miine is different then the one you will need. I know if you put the wrong one in the wrong car is will not seal. I would check the part numbers.....
