Re: oil pan gaskets: rubber, cork or fiber? (Giovanni)

Rubber is the longest lasting and most likely to be able to confrom to any surface irregularities than cork or fibre. An example; older vw engines used cork for the valve cover gaskets and the newer engines use rubber for this same area.

If you have a stock oil cooler (oil cooled by the coolant), check to see if your oil leak is coming from that area. There is an o-ring between the oil filter flange and the oil cooler that can leak. I replaced my o-ring last week, and it solved my oil leak problems. It's a 27mm nut holding the oil cooler on - you can see it after removing the oil filter. I thought the oil pan gasket was my problem, too.

Ive had 3 rubber ones and they all leaked on me. I put in a fiber one and no oil leak. Weird huh?
