Regarding the Passat V6 2003 and maybe others:
I looked but didn't find any discussion that might clear up the conflicting instructions in the manual where they require 5W40 for changes and in an emergency the permission to top up with 5W30.
Those instruction evidently are for european owners. For north american owners a set of substitute instructions says that you should use 5W30 all of the time. If you want 5W40 you can buy synthetic but then the followup is that it is only recommended for the TDI or that with the long change intervals (8000 kms) already there it is no benefit from using the synthetic.
It almost seems that the instrucitons are adjusted based on the availability or what all of the other makers use in north america but I hope there is a better reason.
