The GTI

(Im not used to saying that) is going in for a service this tuesday and i often buy my own oil and get my mechanic to put it in. My old golf, 1.6 used agip oil and i was really happy with that http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
Any suggestions or grades of oil i should be running in the GTI

Adam I used to run Mobil 1 in my GTI ... dunno if that was the best or not, but it seemed to work okay. Can't quite remember the exact spec, but I think it was 0W/40??? Whatever you can buy from the Auto stores anyway, I couldn't seem to track down any other spec for Mobil 1 in Canberra at the time.

As long as it complies with the VW oil standard, can't remember what it is for the 1.8T, then you are safe. That said, IMHO Mobil 1 0W/40 is the ducks guts. Dad used it in his TTr and Porsche use it. As does Saab, Mercedes and I belive BMW does as well. Agip and Elf are also very good. I use Penrite which is also very good, although I'm not sure what they do that complies with the standard.

Shell Helix Ultra is full Synthetic, is cheaper at the Service Stations ($55) than Mobil 1 ($60+), plus you can get it cheaper again at Kmart ($50)

I've used Shell in my T4 from 20,000 km (100,000 km so far) & the motor still sounds like new.

Yes Patrick and I both put Shell Helix Ultra into the GTI's rather than the regular Mobil 1 I had been using in the 1.8T Passat. The Benz runs 0w40 Mobil 1 though as it's what the stealership uses as Ian said.
