Re: oil temp (elotran)

its the oil temp.. the guage in the lower left hand corner is the water.. this one should come up to the 12:00 pos and stay there
oil temps around town vary from just under 200 to over 230

my car will run at 210 if its 110* out or if its 50*... at least its consistent

to guage this, my VR used to run 240's and 250's if i was on the freeway and it was hot out
I hold it at about 220 now due to an front mount oil cooler

Re: oil temp (ThatGuy)

The VR6 engine runs fine at 210-230. My engine occasionally tops 236 in the summer on long highway trips. If it bothers you (it really bothers some people) you can buy a larger oil cooler, or even synthetic oil will help a bit.
In a FAQ somewhere it mentions that VR6 engines don't even blink until the oil reaches 250+. But I can't find it right now.

Re: oil temp (MoTown-VW)

before I replaced the o-rings in my VR6.. I reached about 254 a few times in the summer on a trip from Connecticut to Maine with the AC on. I shut the AC off once it got to the 254 mark and it always went back down.. since I replaced the o-rings about 220 is normal

A note about oil temps

Come on folks.
Don't even *blink* until your oil temps hit 235+F.. the VR6 doesn't.
It'll happily run 230's all day long and it's possible to see 250-260 if
pushed hard on the highway, like A/C on, 104 degrees out, uphill.
And if you run it on the track, it's good till about 280F, and then
you should consider backing off a little. Mine's seen just a tick
over 300F on the track and is none the worse for wear.
When I see people worried about oil temps of 200-210.. I seriously
gotta roll my eyes. The VR6's *optimum* temps are between 180F
and 210F, and it's only mildly warm in the 210-235 range.
There should be something in the VR6 FAQ here.
The VR6 RUNS HOT and that's normal!
