I've been eyeballin' the neighbor's new GTI 1.8T for over a month, and I finally test drove one this evening. This car was even better than I expected! After driving the '99 Civic Hatch for 2.5 yrs, there's no comparison in the smoothness on the road (not to mention the extra power). Looks like I'll be driving away in one in the next couple of days. I am sooo glad I found the Vortex - I have learned so much more than the VW salesmen. Kinda intimidates them

NExt step is to get 1K miles on and chip it.
Also, the dealer had an '01 GTI that he really wanted to cut a deal on. It had 400 miles, and idled rougher than the '02 I also drove. Also made a different noise when the throttle was released, a mellow hum that sounded like the engine winding down. The '02 made no noise - sound like a DV? I told them thanks but no thanks.
