I have a 2.0 16v chipped w/ exaust and lately I've been noticing that at lower revs i.e slow starts. I sometimes get a valve diesel sorta sound...like what diesels sound like...I dont really like that sound, so I obviously give more gas to raise the rev. Now I don't really ever drive slow, but with my exaust I have to creep around the neighbour hood and thats when I get the sound.
Is this an early warning sign? Or nothing to worry about? The head was rebuilt about 6000Km ago.

Have you rebuilt the block? timing chain is ok and not slipping?

I guess I should check on that...could that be the problem? and no...the block hasn't been rebuilt.

o yeah make sure your oil isn't low

Your engine's knocking...or pinging...either one of the two, if there's even a difference. What grade of gas are you running? Because your 16v is chipped, I hope you are running premium gas. Anything less can cause it to make this noise, you need the higher octane rating.
If this isn't the case, you might be looking at some extensive work, but you said the head was just recently rebuilt...hmm.

Ok no making fun, but I haven't been running premium. DAMMIT. I will now. I'm sure thats the problem.

Does it happen right when you leave your neighborhood or when you're returning? If your engine's cold the lifters will tick. Try half a quart of atf. It might quiet the lifters down.

I live in Canada, so I'd assume the cold has that affect as well. I'm sure that if I run premium it'll right this little wrong.

your ignition timing may be too far advanced. you can check that if changing to premium doesn't work.

right. And you might be running low on oil too. Check that if premium gas doesn't work. You can also try changing to a heavier oil. That might work as well.
