All right, I wanna' start by saying thanks to everybody for "Helping a Honda guy out" yesterday!
You were more than helpful, and helped pushed me to go the way of the VW! I know there were a couple issues, and a couple of people that actually told me to go with the Honda Prelude, but I think I'm ready to just roll the dice and go with the 1.8T. Now I have another question for you to ponder! The 1.8T that fits my needs perfectly (the one I test drove) is sitting on the lot at my local VW dealership as we speak. It's black with black leather, 17 inch rims, and amazing looking!
BUT, it does have 105 or so miles already notched on it!
I usually prefer to buy my new cars with as few miles as possible on them, so this does worry me a little. I'm sure those 100 or so test drive miles were probably some of the hardest it'll see in it's life! All that during the sensitive 'break in' period. Would I be better off just waiting for a new one, or if need-be special ordering another one like it? I hear that they redline these cars at the factory, but I still can't help be be concerned! Thanks again guys!

Re: Ok, should I buy this 1.8T? (Racin'Jason)

I don't know man. when I test drove a 1.8T the dealer let me take it out just me and my buddy (who was a very good friend of the particular salesman).
Anyway, I beat the piss out of it!
I'd say wait if you can.

I wouldn't worry about it. 100 miles is nothing. Many of those miles could have been the dealer moving it to/from a storage lot or something. New vehicles right off the truck can have 20-30 miles on the clock depending on how often it's been moved before it even gets to the dealer. Also, don't assume that because two or three people test drove the car that it has been ragged out. I know that when I test drive cars, I always respect that it's not my car and treat it carefully. Many VW owners are the same way. Besides, once you get the car, you're going to be enjoying the hell out of all that power!
VW makes a very solid engine.
Lastly, I think you've made an excellent choice - the 1.8T VS the Honda. I'm extremely satisfied with my VW! I wouldn't trade it for a Prelude. Torque is it! Honda doesn't have it. http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif

LOL! Yeah, I'm with you. I don't beat the hell out my test drives either, but I know there are people who do! I am working under the assumption that this car HAS had the piss beat out of it for the majority of it's 100 miles. Now, how much (if any) will that hurt this young turbo motor?

Casually try to find out from the salesmen if they are in the car for test drives. If they typically ride along with their clients, then the car probably hasn't been beaten as bad as if they were not along. When salespeople are in the car, people normally take it easier on it.

Personally, just because to me if a car has more than 15 miles on it, it's not new - I wouldn't go with it. But the reality of it, is that the car is completely fine, and you should go with it if that's the one you like. If they can special order you one with the same options that as the other car, for the same price, I say wait. But if not, the car is still perfect. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

In the grand scheme of things, it probably wouldn't mean anything. How much ragging can you do on 100 miles, anyway? The car has a rev limiter.
If it bothers you, though, I'd suggest ordering a brand new one and instructing the dealer than NOBODY drives it but you when it comes in. It's really a roll of the dice, though. I had nothing but problems with my first 2002 Golf and I was the first driver. It had like 23 miles on the clock when I got it. VW ended up buying it back. My second 2002 Golf has been perfect. No problems whatsoever. You're more likely to have factory defects than problems because someone drove it hard for a few miles. But again, if it bothers you don't go for it. It's a lot of money. She should be a virgin!

Re: Ok, should I buy this 1.8T? (1.8Trippin)

If it doesn't have any rattles and/or squeaks, you should probably get it... this seems to be a hit-or-miss problem for most people on here, and if you're concerned about it, you might want to take the sure thing rather than a crapshoot with another car.
Of course, if they have already drilled the front bumper and/or added pinstripes (Maund is notorious for this!) then I would wait... pinstripes are fugly and tough to remove, and the car will look MUCH cleaner with no front plate (and that's cool in TX).
Anyway, I finally got rid of all my rattles and it makes driving much more enjoyable. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif Definitely something to check out.
BTW - I was looking at preludes too, and chose a 2002 1.8T jetta. Prelude interior just sucks. Plus my head was about 1" from the roof. Handled like the schizz though!

I was wondering about that, the car does indeed already have pinstripes on it. http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif I can't stand dealerships who automatically assume that this is just something that w/o a doubt, everyone will want!
The GTI I end up driving will definitely be sans pinstripes! Looks like it's gonna' be a factory fresh virgin for me after all!

I am still waiting for mine because I chose to get one with the mileage off of the truck. I have been waiting for a while and getting the run-around from the dealer, but I think that is his way of punishing me for being picky?!
Either way I am anal and I am buying a new car so that I know everything that has happen to it. Anything over 40mi hits the gray area in my book. But that is me.

Really?? I've always heard different! I've heard that it was something that you really never wanna' mess with unless you absolutely have to. Something about whether or not clear coat was applied over them or something?

Buy it and use the milage as a bargining point.
Mine had 462 miles on it when I got it for 1.4K less than the NADA used car orice. I'm over 5k miles now with a jamed rear cup holder the only problem. Just make sure you do a close inspection of the body in daylight. I missed a scrape on a bumper corner, now it's my scrape

If the dealer applied the stripe ...they are not clearcoated. and they will come off very easily with a blow dryer or heat gun. I bought my car with 114 miles on it. Just take that one and have them remove the stripe. the tell them you want an extra " Something" for the car having so many miles on it.....Like a trunk liner or something...oh well good luck and happy driving.

I agree - just have them throw in an extra set of mats, or a CD changer (if you don't have it already), or an extended warranty - you pick.
