ok, tranny/clutch gods speak to me...long

well sunday while at the track i broke my drivers side drive axle (i just changed both late November)...but i did run a 9.9, the run before i broke
, anyway, i swapped the drive shaft yesterday, at first it was making a clunking sound after a test ride, we lifted the wheel up and spun the tire around a few times, we figuered the top joint closest to the tranny was binding, while we were checking to see if the clunking problem was still present, we were rolling it forward a few feet and then back a few feet, did this couple of times and no more clunking sound.. after a few times of that i went forward then tried to put it in reverse, and i cant get it into R anymore
and when im in 1st clutch on the floor, it feels like it wants to go forward kinda, also my speedo doesnt work anymore, tach etc..works... i dont notice any difference in the feel of the clutch...
time for a new clutch? throw out bearing? did i brake something in the tranny also?
anybody have an idea?
thanks for any help!!

Speedo's driven from a cable attached to the top of the tranny. Haven't looked where the tach is connected ... so it could be a tranny problem. Pull it. Pull the whole lot engine and tranny, we'll have fun. We'll put a new clutch and throw out and all that good stuff back in.
On the CCA page is says the tranny comes out without remiving the engine. I never managed when I pulled mine, had to remove the lot.
Was it really worth the 9.99?

The tach is driven from that same source as the speedo. If you have an early g60 (1990) then it is attached to the instruments via a cable, if you have a later model (1991 up) you have digital gauges and there's a plug on the tranny where the speedo cable should be, with a wiring harness running to the instruments.
The tranny can be pulled without taking the engine out. You either have to be very very creative in maneuvering the tranny, or creative some other way. I took the rear subframe off my car, and that made soooo much more room, getting the tranny out was simple. Taking the subframe off only added about an hour to the job.
I can't really think of anything that would be causing these problems, it seems like an odd combination of symptoms. Hope the above info helped anyway.

thanks man, yea mine is early 6/89 so the stciker in the door jam says, so i have a cable driven speedo right...i guess when it broke it hit the cable or something.....

ill have to remember about the subframe trick ill take everything out before the motor...

Yeah, taking the subframe off isn't very difficult, and it gives you waaay more room to work with.
I'm still not sure about the whole speedo thing - if there was a problem with the cable or the speedo cable gear in the tranny, I'd really expect the tach to be dead also. I am thinking that there's a problem in your gauge unit somewhere, but I can't think how snapping a driveshaft would cause a problem in the gauge unit. Who knows.

yep....what they said.
Re: ok, tranny/clutch gods speak to me...long (Tom - G - ride)

Well if the gear on the end of the cable goes...It may cuase probs in tha tranny. If you dropped the gear off the end of the cable you may have got it lodged somewhere. The speedo and tach etc are run separately. The speedo is a completely mechanical system while teh rest of the equipment is electrical. We had a similar prob on an 87 Diesel. Like I said, it may be lodged somewhere in the tranny. Good luck.

update: well today i took it for a little spin , still no reverse..
all the others 1,2,3,4 seem fine, but 5th its REAL hard to find/get in gear, its keeps jumpin into 3rd, takes me 2 or 3 trys to get it in 5th.... also when sitting in neutral at idle every couple of seconds theres clunking noise like something is spining in the tranny...

Hey, do your fuel and temp gauges work still?
Reason I'm asking is my spoiler blew a fuse last night (I hope) and it's stuck halfway. But now I've got no tach, fuel or temp showing. They could be all on the same fuse but ... YOU'VE GOT MY BENTLEY!!!
I know it doesn't relate to your shifting but your tach could be an electrical problem.
Anyway, I looked at your tranny while you were at work and I saw where reverse isn't engaging. Go through MY BENTLEY and give the shift linkage adjustment a try. Go through it step and step and see what you get.
Lemme know, gotta get the B***H running for Treffen! http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

as far as I know they are all on the same circuit.....as for the speedo problem, good luck man....sounds to me like your going to be putting a tranny in...it's not a hard job to do.....to do it without taking hte subframe off, you have to take all the bolts off, get the flywheel lined up (the grove in it) pull the tranny up, from the differential side...flip it forward, get it angled right...then take the tranny, and angle it so the driver side end is goin towards the front of the car...that'll clear the cv joint hookups from the flywheel......then from there just wrestle with it a bit, turning it up and down clockwise and counterclockwise, and it'll slide right out http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif but it's a bit more complicated to do....takes some time if it's your first time.....good luck!

well we tried adjusting the shift links but still no reverse, could my reverse syncro be shot?, i started driving it again a couple of days ago with no reverse and the clutch and all the other gears are working fine, still no speedo but I'll look into that Saturday...any thoughts about the syncro idea?

It is early in the morning and my head is not clear, but I don't think that reverse was synchro'd in these trannies.

alright now it sounds like my tranny is whining, its louder the faster im going, and it stops when i put the clutch down...anyone think its time for a new or rebuilt tranny?
Re: ok, tranny/clutch gods speak to me...long (PoweredByG60)

check the fluid level...
dry gears get noisy.
get a VR6 tranny if you have to get another... better gearing, and you could just swap the bellhousings to make it fit.
Re: ok, tranny/clutch gods speak to me...long (jwatts)

so danny, a vr6 corrado tranny will bolt up to my G60 huh? im guessing that the VR tranny's are alittle stronger also correct, since your little stg4 chip & FPR is now breaking drive shafts and tearing up trannys!!
guess the torque is alittle high!!
just swap the bellhousing? tell me more about this VR6 tranny swap / upgrade!! how much ,where to get one, etc.....

Not really. The vr6 and the g60 both used the 02a transmissions, but different versions. You can't literally take a vr6 02a and bolt it to the g60 block.
But, if you either put the g60 02a bell housing on the vr6 02a tranny, or put the internals of the vr6 02a into the g60 02a housing (essentially both of those processes are the same), then you can bolt up to the g60 block.
The trannies from the vr6 aren't really any stronger, the only difference is the gear ratios.
See http://www.kraftswerk.com to get listings of the different gear ratios available.
