Max Hoffman's showroom at 430 Park Avenue in Manhattan. It is now a Mercedes showroom, but at one time it was one of the most influential dealerships in the United States.

I wish well hit another stage like this. It seems like back then everyone was into cars/performance. Now it's MPG/Eco friendly. Which is equally important, but it would be nice to have both.

We were driving through a miniscule town in Saskatchewan last year named Herbert, and I thought I would just check out some of the streets. Well, lo and behold, here was this building on the corner:

From what I understand, this was some kind of a sales outlet/manufacturing place for Ford Model Ts! The Ford insignia is even laid out in tiles on the ground in front of the main door. I'll go back this summer and check it out some more...

Re: (Lethbridge_man)

Okay, some stuff:
Parlett Ford became Normandy Ford, which then became Miller Bros Ford, which is now vacant. The first sign of Carmageddon... and the first place I ever saw a Ford GT in the, erm, flesh:

Now, this is Forty West Motors, which became Russell Automotive, selling Toyota, VW, Subaru, BMW, Scion, and Mazda. For a short while in the early-mid 90's, they sold Buick because they couldn't give BMW's away... recessions are a bitch, we found out.

And the one that brings a tear... City Olds. Back in the day, there were the "Six Gallant Men of Olds," as the local dealers called themselves. Can see their ads on TV, still. Usually after a Trofeo ad!
I can also still remember the day I went with my dad and grandfather when Pop bought his then brand new 1986 Cutlass Supreme Brougham from Mr. Walt, who sold dad his Delta 88. In 1996, it became the first car of a dumb gear head kid that didn't know algebra but could tear down a Rochester carb blindfolded. I can still see the giant mural of the "classic" Olds cars on the wall above the service bays. Directly behind the main lot on the left of the showroom. Unfortunately, it was torn down after City Olds folded and is now among other things, a Giant Food, an Autozone, and a toilet for West Baltimore crackheads.

And this gem, just googling the name, 2:47 for City Olds part, 4:17 for a shot of the showroom, circa 1982. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJ-7Yzf_sX4
And WTF, I remember Mr Ray's Hair Weave Ads!!! And Jack Luskin was indicted on fraud charges IIRC.
A second with Mr Nobody, from about 1984, with some classic Datsuns...

I remember those, too!

Re: (TurboJewUrS4)

Max Hoffmann was far, far more than just an influential car dealership in New York City. Hoffmann personally instigated the production of many now-legendary automobiles, just one being the Mercedes Benz 300SL coupe, when Daimler Benz executives were harboring doubts about such a car's saleability. He was the initial importer of dozens of both minor import players, such as Sunbeam and Hillman, and some that were to later be titans in the business, like VW. The guy, you might as well just say it, gave birth to the modern-day imported automobile business in America. I heard not too long ago that a comprehensive biography of Mr. Hoffmann was being written by a major historian, and hopefully it will be published soon. Most of the members of this forum are driving the legacy of Max Hoffmann.

That old boy buying that Datsun probably outlived the sheetmetal on his car.
Those were fairly popular in the Chicago area in the mid/late sixties, and they literally had gaping holes in the tin after about a year of use.
