I have a 99 1.8T wagon that rides like jello. It has 142,000 miles on it with the original shocks and springs. I have 15' wheels that unfortunately I will be keeping. This needs to be wife friendly so I can not lower it to much. What is you recommendation from all you variant owners. Also I will be getting new front A-arms as well as mine are starting to make noise.

Re: Old wagon needs suspension help (Wagonsport)

At 142,000 miles, I would be tempted to sell it and get a new car.
Putting new shocks on will cost quite a bit, especialy if you have
it done someplace. I have not looked into it, but you might
need an alignment after fitting new front shocks.
Along with the suspension bits, that is a lot of money to put into
a car with 142,000 miles on it.
You might just drive it the way it is until something blows.
Of course, you can put new shocks, new brakes, get the timing belt
done again, replace other things that wear out, but then you might
find the ac system craps out, heater core starts leaking, transmission
or clutch goes, turbo starts making noise, battery dies, etc...
You can keep any car like new, depends on how much you want to
spend, but dumping loads of cash into an almost worthless car
is risky, as something major can go at any time.
Since its a 1999, I suspect its a lot of hiway miles you have on the car,
and they are the best miles, but things WILL crap out with age and
miles.
How many miles do you expect to get out of the car?
200,000?
300,000?
Perhaps the cheapest shocks you can get would be best.
If you put new shocks and other bits on, the car wont be worth
any more as a trade in, or private sale, all anyone will see
is 142,000 miles....

I would expect that the control arms are what you meant for a-arms. If they are being replaced,
you can have a set of shocks added for just a little more labor. They have to come out with the
front suspension when the control arms are replaced.
Since you don't care about lowering, just replace the shocks. It will make a world of difference.
Cost for parts is about $400,depending on what you get. I have Konis and prefer them to the
Bilsteins. I have heard KYB are even cheaper cost wise and not too firm. You can save by
crusing the classifieds here and at http://www.clubb5.com There are often shocks for sale at 30-50% off.

Brett, thanks for your opion. Selling the car is not an option right know. I still owe to much on the loan. If I could sell it I would get a new TDI as I put more than 100 miles a day on it. I expect than when I do sell it I won't get much for it. Being that it does have so many miles on it what is your opion on shocks and springs?

I would say get the cheapest shocks short of kyb.
I have not heard good things about kyb shocks.
Normaly I buy the best i can for my cars, but in your case,
maybe get cheaper shocks, even monroes....

100 miles a day will typicly get you about 300,000 miles
or more out of a car, once its running on the hiway, engine wear
is very very low. Tires and brakes wear out (and shocks), but
most major things love hiway miles.
Maybe car pool with someone to offset the miles, I knew a few people
who did 100 or more miles a day, and went over 150,000
miles before paying off their car.
Quite sad to be paying for a car, and paying to repair it
with over 150,000 miles on it.
I think one guy went in on a van to pool with a bunch of others,
partly to save their cars, partly so they could sleep on the way in to work...

The Monroe Sensatrak is every bit as expensive as the Konis. They
are also on factory back order.
