Has anyone bought their VW online? Who did you use, and how did the process compare to conventional dealership haggling?

For some info on online car buying, check out this story: http://www.edmunds.com/advice/specialreports/articles/48642/article.html?id=lin9126
Re: Online Car Buying (VeeDubDriver)

Already did.
Is it possible to get a 2002 Passat GLX sedan with Tiptronic for $27k or $28k? Anybody done it? That's just a couple bucks over Consumer Reports' Wholesale Price.

Invoice is $27737, and you still havent paid ad fees, dealer prep, and other non-negotiable things Edmunds doesn't mention.
A dealer isn't going to sell you an '02 at invoice right now, not on this planet.
Re: Online Car Buying (spongebob_squarepants)

I agree. I think a price of around $28,500 would be a good goal, however it all depends on the supply and demand situation in your area.
Online for a GTI

Yes, I just bought a GTI 1.8t w/ lux. package and 17" wheels for just a few bucks
over invoice. I started out asking for a quote from an in town dealer via email and got back 22K as an "out the door" price including TX 6% sales tax on cars. I then emailed an out of town dealer regarding the exact same car about 70 miles away and he shot back 20,850. I then asked the local dealer to better this and put the out of town dealer's itemized quote in that email. He then shot back saying you would match the other dealer's 20,850 and that I would have the advantage of not waiting a week for the out of town dealer to get it in. I then emailed the out of town and asked him for an "enticement" to drive 70 miles and he quoted me 20,600 "out the door." I then email my local and told him I would buy the car today if he could do 20,500 - he never replied. So this week I went down to the out of town dealer and picked up the car w/ no haggling or gimmicks. They only thing they tried to do was sell me on the extended warranty. I got 5.5% financing and really good dealer service(he explained everything possible about the car including maintenance) and am very satisfied 22 hours later.

Re: Online for a GTI (ggoldman)

I bought my GTI last August using Autobytel.com. I think it's important to know exactly what you want and have already shopped the best price at a few dealers before using this sort of service. For my GTI, the autobytel.com dealer undercut the best I'd been able to negotiate in-person by about $500. My previous experience with autobytel, I was able to do better in-person at a local dealer than over the phone with the dealer referred by autobytel.

The important thing is that the more offers you can get, the better your position is when it comes time to bargain.

I bought my 2002 Jetta 1.8T GLS using carsdirect. They process was quick, easy and painless. I got a better price from carsdirect than I was able to get from local dealers and they got me the exact car that I wanted.

Re: Online Car Buying (HMK)

I love looking up prices at CarsDirect because it gives you an actual selling price that you can use in your negotiations.
Re: Online Car Buying (VeeDubDriver)

For the record,
We bought the Passat today! Thank you for all the help everyone!
We went with a 2002 Passat GLX sedan; Blue Silver with Black Leather.
The car cost $28,040. After tax, tags, and titling, we were out the door for $29,665. This means, working off the true cost-to-dealer (invoice minus "Dealer Holdback" of $575) of $27,162, the dealer made a 4.05% profit before tax. A reasonable deal for both of us. We also were able to get a 5.5% for 36 mo. loan from VW Credit. Good deal.
Frank Dickinson was a nice guy, at Martens VW in DC, and answered our questions and was reasonably pleasant for a salesman. He was not insulted, or did not appear to be, that he did most of the negotiating with a teenager (I got my parents to the dotted line for their car, and they signed). However, it seemed that when I asked him to match a quote of $100 over invoice before arriving, when we arrived an invoice was shown with several hundred dollars of those damn advertising fees. Maybe (probably) they were ligit; however, I think 4% is a good compromise. Not the best deal on Earth, but a good deal. And when we asked for him to search the area for Fresco Greens while we went to lunch, we were given the excuse upon our return that the "Volkswagen satellite" was down for repairs, as always happened on Saturdays. Do you really think they would do "repairs" on their "satellite" linking the dealers on President's Day weekend? Suuure....
Again, an OK deal. We did pay $100-or-so under Edmund's TMV.

Re: Online Car Buying (mr_mbuna)

That is the whole point of TMV. It gives you an idea of what people are paying in your area and if you meet or beat it, then you know you are getting a good deal.
Re: Online Car Buying (VeeDubDriver)

VeeDub,
There are 260 miles on the odometer at the time of purchase, and the old-style Single-DIN radio. Should we be suspicious? VWGuild made a sarcastic remark that "we got what we paid for," but why would a new car have 260 miles on it? They are putting in a free in-dash CD, so the single-DIN is no biggie.
Ben
Re: Online Car Buying (mr_mbuna)

single-din is actually a better radio, problems have been common with the new double-din unit.
Sounds like the car sat on the lot awhile and got some demo miles.
Re: Online Car Buying (mr_mbuna)

I agree, the double-DIN units seem to have a few problems. You are probably better off with the single-DIN unit, especially if you are getting the CD player. As for the miles, it is higher than normal but I wouldn't be too concerned, especially since this is not a turbo motor.
Just enjoy your new car...until the first payment is due...lol!
