I have a friend who just purchased a used 2000 Honda Prelude SH. The hp on that baby is about 200hp with about 150lb of torque. We were joking around to see which car would perform better? I have a Upsolute Chipped Jetta Vr6 5speed. Any opinions guys?

Re: [OPINION] Prelude SH vs Chipped Jetta Vr6 (Black2k1Vr6)

i have a friend with a prelude... that thing is FAST!!!!! they are one of the few hondas i really truely like... if not overdone... they have some MAD raw horsepower... and can look really sweet... i would have to say that the prelude would carry his own cause it is sweet... my friend can beat me anyday but im a 1.8t unchipped, once i chip and exhaust it he might have a good run for his money, but not yet...

They have around the same 0-60 and 14 mile times as a vr6. Stop light racing is a differnt story all together. Race before he learns that he has to drop the clutch at like 5k to get a good launch. I spanked a prelude last week...Jumped like 3 car lengths by the time I had hit 2nd. If they know how to drive em they will give you a decent run though.

You should win...it'll be close. I've raced a few of those and them things move. But for 176hp on a VR and weighing 2900lbs, our cars can sure move fast! DON'T mess up in shifting!!!

The Prelude was what i was considering before I landed at the GTI. They have some really weak low end, until you get to about 5000rpm its like a wet noodle, then its almost like a turbo or n2o.
It would be close.

I launch at 3k =...ideal is 3-4k and then drop the clutch.

Re: [OPINION] Prelude SH vs Chipped Jetta Vr6 (Black2k1Vr6)

My bro has a 1998 prelude sh stick same as 2000 and i have a 2001 jetta glx 5sp.
My car was slower when i first got and lost to him. I have raced him a few times more since i had my car i put some miles on my car and never lost. He has a intake and that is it. Im bone stock. I raced them on the highway once and that thng was staying behing thats when ieached 140mph the tac said. The sh handles better then the vw. The prelude just needs more torque and would be faster.

I totally walked on some fool in a Prelude SH in my bone stock GTI the other night...I say fool because he tried pulling a Honda victory after the fact by cutting into the emergency lane around a semi-truck...only visible mods were exhaust and suspension...and some sort of gauge on the A-pillar...it's an incredible rush to surprise people in my "girly" VW...hehe
gawd I luv my GTI !!!

My best times come when I launch under 3. Too much wheel spin and clutch slippage at 3. Our cars have too much power and combined with front wheel drive 3000rpm is too high for me.
I launch around 2300 and have had times in the mid to upper 7s using a G-Tech pro. This is on stock crappy tires. One might be able to get away with higher launch times with better tires.
VR6 vs Prelude.... it's all about driver... until you hit the corners and then he's gone. (ahead, that is) I drove an SH and those handle awesome. There's a bit of plow but the car sits pretty flat through the corner and it's stable as hell.

My cousin has a 2001 Prelude SH and I have raced him many times in my J4 vr6.
We raced from full stop 4 or 5 times and he beat me by about half a car length each time up to about 80 or 90mph. But since your vr6 is upsoluted I think you can take him. The prelude driver is gonna have to drop his clutch at 5K rpms or he will lose badly!

Right, with no wheel spin. If you just "drop" the clutch at 3-4 grand, you'll spin your tires and watch the other guy get the jump on you big time. There is no way you can launch more than 2800-3000 without a good amount of wheel spin, especially if you're chipped like I am. From experience, my best launches come from 2800, and you don't just drop the clutch. Feel it through. I'd like to see someone drop the cluth at 4k and go anywhere.

I dunno Preludes have a nice top end for a Honda. For example i raced a early 90's 195hp VTEC Prelude on the highway, he was on my ass till about 120mph when i got a little jump but he was still very close. I also raced a 00 ITR shortly after also on the highway, he had me in 3rd about 1/2 carlenght, then at around 90-95mph i started catching up and by 120mph i was ahead about 1 1/2 carlength and kept on pulling away hard till 130mph when we both shut down.
