opinions on DSR256 and VGI combo

I can't decide if I want to go FI or not. I'm pretty sure I don't now, it just seems like too much money and too much trouble down the road. I guess what I'm looking for is a descent bump in power but without the added trouble or stress on my engine. I like some of the stuff I've heard about running the VGI and DSR256 cams. I've heard some bad stuff about running the 268's, I don't like having to change to HD springs and there's been talk of springs breaking lately. I would like any info you guys have on this. Is the VGI worth it?

Those 20 lb-ft of torque are so worth it, beleive me. 256s plus the VGi will make for one sweet ride. Maybe down the road fit a big valve head... There's a lot to be had from a NA 2.8L VR6, it just takes wads of cash and a perspective that values drivability and seamless power delivery over quarter mile times and peak hp numbers. Even at $1400, the VGi is worth every penny.

thanks for the info. anybody else, i'll be making my purchases soon so any help you guys could give me would be great.

anybody else have info on this? also, do you need to make the TB bigger when running the VGI?
Re: opinions on DSR256 and VGI combo (dfinn)

Changing the tb should be one of your last mods.

You should look at the post for the Cat Cams... 268 I know, but they are less expensive than schrick268 and give ~ same power as schrick... I know some folks in here (Quebec) who are rollin those cams on their VR6 and who are completly satified of it.... And I know Trac are doin some nice price for dubbers in here, so in US$ in will be a better buy

what about a 260/264 setup with the VGI? Perhaps that would be a better combo? I've been told that the stock valve springs for a 260/264 setup will be ok, anybody know about this?
Re: opinions on DSR256 and VGI combo (dfinn)

I have read in numerous places that Kent makes an excellent set of 264 cams. Why not upgrade the springs to some Schrick HD springs? Allows for possible revving up to 8k rpm(at least that's what I read somewhere). Yeah, those Cat cams sound like a great buy. I still wanna see a dyno compared to Schrick. VGi is http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif Big valve head is a good mod to do way down the road. From what I've been told about it is you loose some lowend torque. If you don't wanna go through putting your engine through all the stress of a turbo, get a supercharger, much more streetable I think, not as much power, but also less stress on the engine

on an obd II engine will you through codes if you mess with your throttle body?
Re: opinions on DSR256 and VGI combo (dfinn)

Schrick 264/260's (the numbers aren't reversible, intake vs. exhaust) have a higher valve lift on the intake than the 268's, and a lower valve lift on the exhaust than said cams. Therefore, you almost must run stiffer valve springs on the intake side. These are actually a more aggressive cam than the 268's, which is why I'm getting a set as we speak (thanks Eric!!http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif). What I can't understand is why everyone tries to compare or decide between the DSR256's and the 268's and completely forgets about the 264/260's. I've compared enough dyno sheets to see that they have nearly the same profile as the 256's, with power coming on only 400 RPM later, but lasting almost as long as the 268's, which is more than long enough for me. The best of both worlds.

Re: opinions on DSR256 and VGI combo (sdriver)

I have a set of brand new schrick 268's. techtonics heavy duty springs and titanium retainers for sale for 675 plus shipping, let me know. If you want to laugh at the vtec boys, put the 268's in your car, trust me its worth it!

I lov emy Kent 264 cams. Never drove a 268 car, but they pull great. I'll be getting a nice dyno chart tomorrow at the CT dyno day. I'll mail it to whoever wants.

Sure, why don't you post it here. It's relevant. Thanks.
Re: opinions on DSR256 and VGI combo (dfinn)

Go with the 256s. I am getting ready to add a set with my VGI and then add the Z-charger along with it. With the GIAC Z-charger chip, the car is said to put down 255 whp. With the VGI it should add another 5-10 hp. Also, going with the 256s lets you have the option of going SC. The 268s do not give you that option.
Just my $0.02
Re: opinions on DSR256 and VGI combo (vwbarks)

buy my 268's and the rest of my stuff and get a giac chip and you will be running the same times as the Z charger with 256's and vgi! Trust me on this, You can still run a blower with the 268's I have seen it done many of times! thank you!
