Looking for quick results here guys, thus the G4J4 placement. This is the fastest forum.
We're having an internal discussion about forum functionality and we're just curious.
How do you feel about the Forum IM Function? Which description best describes your take on it.

I like the added functionality it provides. Sure you can send e-mails, but then again, you could substitute this for any of the IM programs. If this feature is becoming problematic, perhaps the Vortex should endorse one of the many IM standards and request that members register with it so we can talk to each other like we do now.

it's an OK feature, but i find that people use it to send rude messages which they know would get their topic locked when you don't agree w/ their opinion, etc.

I like it, but there is one thing I hate about it....it keeps popping up when I'm trying to reply to a forum thread. I'd like it to automatically minimize when I'm replying to a thread.

It's not problematic, so much as we are trying to determine what features are important in future forum solutions.

if you said 'removing vortex IM is going to fix the 'zeroforum database errors' then i'd say chuck it, and have a spot for people to put in their AIM / YHOO / MSFT messenger ids...
otherwise, i find it useful, and use it a few times a day....

I find its performance to be very poor. It just doesn't refresh properly. Significant lag before I receive the latest response from the other party, and by that time I had already written up a reply that is now out of context, given the most recent reply of the other party. It's like talking on a satellite phone with severe latency -- there's this incredible lag that throws everyone's timing off. ICQ or MSN messenger would be WAY better.

George, the IM function is the key of existance here! When we first switched I thought it would be a very stupid feature and never get used. But since the switch I've found myself using it more and more. It's great to make replies to people you don't want everybody to read, or contact somebody who is selling something . . . The options for it are pretty endless.
Please don't take away such a valuable tool. I'd rather loose the search engine!

I think it saves alot of worthless posts. Alot of times i Instant Message people that posted something or had a comment about what i said.. Or if i was asking what people were up to.. yadda yadda yadda... it is great to have, but not end all of the functions..

Agreed! Though I like it, I would gladly sacrifice it for better forum performance. Everyone should have an IM service that they use, such as ICQ or AIM anyway......so if you want an IM, you can post your IM user name.

agreed. perhaps next to our username where there's our car info, there can be a field for AIM name, ICQ#, yahoo name, or MSN name, so whoever uses those services can have it show below their name.

I like it, it is nice to be able to chat with someone while you are browsing the Vortex. It is also funny because you can comment about a thread to someone specifically without having to post for everyone to read. just my two cents...

The point to VWvortex forums is to bring together VW enthusiasts! The specialized IM function furthers this goal. However, I dislike the VWvortex IM lag. Anyway to improve performance?

Why? I have no need for any of those services, nor would I use them. Some of us also cannot use them in places we access the board from. However, the IM functionality in the context of this board has and is useful, and doesn't require some proprietary client that may not be supported on the OS I'm operating on (we don't all use MS or Mac stuff). My only complaint is that it's sometimes slow when it comes to how quickly messages get sent.
