Judging by these posts you need the 3 wire O2 sensors.

...89 mustang, taurus or escort....just make sure its a 3 wire sensor. chop off the ford connector and solder or crimp the VW harness to the new sensor. the colors will match up, black to black and white to white (there are 2 white wires, doesnt matter which wires you connect to as long as white goes to white)
all 3 wire o2 sensors work the same way and the ford o2 is actually cheaper than the universal!!! chop off the ford connector and u actually have a universal sensor. mine cost about $38

One thread suggests staggering the cuts so the splices will never short to other wires.

According to these threads you can use a Taurus O2 sensor and they can be found for as little as $29.00.
Good luck.

sure would be nice if the 1 wire worked, i have a brand new one in my closet from a previous car.

OK for the seven hundredth time. You can use ANY OXYGEN sensor from ANY CAR excluding wideband O2's which is mostly hondas and I guess the MK4 2.0 also.
ALL NARROW BAND OXYGEN SENSORS OUTPUT THE SAME VALUES

That's my website, it has O2 sensor information on there
Yes you can use the one wire sensor on a three wire car and just not hook it up, the O2 heater circuit runs off the fuel pump circuit. But it doesn't make any sense to do it, non heated sensors have a life expectancy of like half the amount of miles of a heated one. Go to a junkyard, and pull a friggin 3 wire out of any car there, the wire that has continuity to the body of the O2 sensor is the signal wire, the other 2 are heater wires, thats an easy way to figure it out.
