OK so I have a 2010 GTI with 80k miles that I bought used a couple years ago. The transmission has always felt a bit mushy and slow especially when changing between D and R. Once I'm going it's fine. A couple years ago I got the flashing PRNDS problem where I couldn't get the car into gear. It was a really cold day and eventually it started working again so I just wrote it off as a freak occurence.

Last week my car got stuck in 1st gear and again PRNDS was flashing. Took the car the to a mechanic and they said it was error P2711 and that the only real fix would be a transmission replacement which runs about $6k. They were leery of running like this as I'm likely to have failures more frequently but they weren't really pushing for the service either as it's probably not worth the repair at that cost.

I am not sure if the previous owner did the 40k service/if anything has been done to take care of the transmission. I am going to a transmission specialist Friday.

Questions:

1. I am really not clear on VW's stance on DSG problems. It seems like they know there's a fault but I have no idea if they will fix any part of this for free. I called one dealership and they weren't super helpful. Can someone provide a clear answer?
2. Does this sound like something that requires a replacement or could a transmission service or less costly repair take care of it?
3. Does anyone know of a good specialist in Massachusetts who might want to tackle this?

Thanks for the help!

P2711 usually means worn clutch.
If it happen on a very cold day , might be also oil pressure related ... firs I would change oil and filter. Also if very cold in the morning , let the car idle for a minute or two before you take off.
