Paint coming off key

877 Views 19 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  Vdub16v
I wish I would have seen this coming. The VW on my key is coming off, I guess just from having it in my pocket with some change. If I had thought of it I would have clear-coated it a bunch myself.
Anyone else experience this? Is there some way just to replace the symbol? I know it's a little issue, but the car's only a week and a half old.

Re: Paint coming off key (smd3)

very odd sounds like the symbol wasn't glued on good enough. why don't you peal it off and then reglue it with some hefty glue.
Mine has been find for 6months and it gets thrown all over the place.
Re: Paint coming off key (smd3)

My key has been dropped, jingled, jangled, rubbed, scrubbed, and otherwise mangled since August of 1999 with no damage to the emblem.
It sounds like what happens to the paint on BMW badges. I had a friend with a high pressure nozzle on a hose, and he was spraying the emblem directly. All of a sudden huge flakes of paint flew off - he blew away about 70% of the front emblem.
Re: Paint coming off key (achtung)

I've got a nasty scratch on mine from dropping it down a flight of stairs, but it's just metal underneath. The rest is fine.
Re: Paint coming off key (smd3)

I guess I should have been a little more clear. The disk is intact, it's the painting on the disk.
Not that big of a deal, it's just kind of a drag showing off your new nifty folding key and the vw symbol is slowly dissapearing.
Re: Paint coming off key (smd3)

smd3, when you goto your dealer for your service or if you want now just mention that the key isn't holding up
see if they say anything. It's worth a shot.

Re: Paint coming off key (landrumdh)

good point, I'll mention it. I've got a number of other things to mention.
I walked out the door of the service garage to hear a New Bug being wound out. I'd say it had to be 5000rpm or more. I look just in time to seen the driver slam on the brakes, hard. I turned right back in and yelled at the service manager.
"I hope that's not how you treat all the cars" I said...
He went in back and talked to the guy who drove it. He cam back and said the it is definetly not "normal" practice. He said the driver was checking something out.
I find it really strange they were checking something out in 1st gear only using the 150-200ft strip from the parking spot to the back of the garage.
I made it very clear that my car has no tranny problem, no engine problem and has no need to be driven like that. I reminded him that my car isn't even past break in. he then proceeded to change the subject.
How can I be sure they aren't beating on my car? Is there really a way they can tell if the engive has been over-revved? What if the dealer causes this condition...
anyway, maybe that's enought for a new thread.. oh well...
guess I'll have to baby sit my car at the dealer.

Re: Paint coming off key (smd3)

ya I know what you mean. I saw a bug also being revved up high like that while parked. I was like WTF. Not much you can do besides just sit there and watch them do your service which is what I will normally do as long as it isn't to cold out.
Re: Paint coming off key (smd3)

i know i'm replying to a really old post here but you are the only person i've found through searching that has the same problem. my gti is 3 weeks old and already the vw symbol has flat out fallen off of BOTH of my switchblade keys. i don't recall dropping them especially hard, and no i don't know where the symbols are. like you said, not a big deal but kind of annoying considering i've only had the car 3 weeks.
did you have any luck with the dealer on this? seems like exactly the kind of thing that will get you a blank stare from the service person and a response like "uh, you could get a new key i guess."

Who's wondering? It's pretty clear actually. I never wondered why I hated the MKIV forum when I had an MKIII. I knew, and it hasn't changed.
