I am considering painting my valances. My only concern is that the paint is not going to last long, and I will be forever having them repainted. I know the plastic flexes, so a flex agent is needed to keep them from flaking off.
I have the right equipment to do them myself, or I may have them done for me..
My question to you guys is how long did your last before you had to have them repainted. Also, how much did you pay to have them done correctly? And, did you smooth them or leave them textured. Thanks!

Re: Painted valances - how long did they last? (2kjettaguy)

i plan on having this done as well, so i've read some of the threads that have come up regarding this issue. the consensus appears to be that there should be no problems with chipping so long as the proper amount of flex agent is used. several people have stated that they have had their painted valences for over a year without any signs of chipping. as for sanding them, i've heard that they come out better if you do sand them (better color match), but to also be careful as the plastic may melt from the heat. wet sanding by a professional body shop may be your best bet.

quote:

a year is a short period of time in the long run

true, but then again, how long has the mkIV line been around?

for what it's worth, i haven't heard any complaints about having to repaint valences because of chipping. *shrug* if my valences start chipping, i guess i'd just put my old valences back on... (or if you had your stock valences painted, you can pick up new ones from the dealer for $60 each.)

I am in the process of sanding down a pair of 4motion valences. Its a lot of work by hand, but I haven't had any problems with the plastic melting. You probably have to use electric sander to do that, something I don't have.
Good Luck.

I'm thinking of getting my front and rear valences painted by my body shop alongside an insurance claim I have (some dude backed into my front bumper, denting my rub strip). I'll find out how they will go about doing it and if they use flex agent or not.

Okay boys, I can help you out. I've had my valences painted for almost two years. I live in Canada and I've been through two winters. I would think that winters here are the best possible test conditions as the combination of graveled roads and cold temperatures should be good for a few paint chips. My valences are fine. I was willing to take the chance because the body shop gave me a lifetime guarantee on the paint. I don't know what kind of paint they used but it was a clearcoat. It looked like they put a couple clear coats on, but I'm not sure. Don't ask me about the flexing agent, either. I recommend going for it and find a place with a lifetime guarantee for peace at mind. Cost was only about $225 CDN.
I was one of the first vortexers to have this done. I had it done because I love the look of the darker Jettas because the valence blends in better. For an eigth of the price of a body kit (bumpers), it's probably my modification most valuable (although, 50 hp for $750CDN was a close second!).

Do you mean how long will they last without you scratching them up? At least as long as the rest of your car's paint.
The only other way it wouldn't last was if you scuffed them up, from bottoming out on speed bumps, steep driveways, etc. But that really only applies to the front valance. Take a close look at your stock ones and see how scuffed up they are. That will pretty much tell you how long it will last.

After proper prep (no oil/wax/roadkill...) must be primed and sprayed with a two part standard auto paint (Ditzler, et al) or better, Imron or Awlgrip. The paints are flexible, tough and will last longer than you care. Frankly, would have it done professionally as these paints must not be inhaled.
New versions of two part boat paints can be brushed on carefully with good results, but would suggest having it done correctly. Best.
