Just use like 400 grit sandpaper and some flat black spray paint.
What I want to know is the best way to remove the rear emblem. My front is already de-badged, but I wanna ghetto-fy my rear emblem black.

search for cullen, he can get you OEM ones for cheap. why bother painting when you can have one for little money?

There is no reason to wait that long to get the black emblems, now some of the odd ball stuff Cullen has access to in Estonia then that is worth the wait.
You can get the black emblems at the dealership if you want them quick. But I would suggest getting them from a place like Potterman.
Here is the one for the Golf\GTI

why pay $20 for one when you can paint it for under $5 and 10 minutes of your time?

I would use SEM flat black paint. thats what I used. nothing is better in my opinion. SEM is a little pricey though. I think like 10 bucks a can

The rear emblem on my golf was held on with no glue or anything, it just had 2 plugs that went into 2 holes in the back of the hatch. I just took a flat headed screwdriver, and a piece of cloth. Using the cloth under the screwdriver so I wouldn't scratch my paint, I just slid it in and pried it out. Took about 10 seconds, don't worry about breaking anything, the little holder thingamajigs that the emblem goes into are really bendy plastic, and I can't see how you could screw them up.
The rear black emblem I got from Potterman didn't have the studs, just a sticky rear. So I washed the spot really really well, then pushed it down. The glue didn't seem all that strong, but it stuck down really strongly against the paint. So make sure you position it right the first time.
Also, I filled the holes with silicone to make sure that no water could leak into my hatch. You might want to try this.

How do you get the front one off?

Easiest is to remove the entire grill...4 screws up top, along with 4 clips....then two main clips on either side along the bottom, pretty easy to remove, you cannot see the clips on the two sides, but stick your hand in from the top and feel around, they're right there

OK, I just removed the grill today so here's what I remember...
1-open the hood
2-remove the 4 screws
3-undo the top clips (may require some effort)
4-(here's my ghetto method) bend a wire clothes hanger and reach down behind the grill [which is hanging outwards now] to unclip the bottom clips of the grill {it should pop out itself}
5-locate the clips under the piece by the headlights, use the clothes hanger to pop that clip
6-remove grill from car
7-using a flathead screwdriver, pry off the top clip of the badge...[i did the bottom two first and it's impossible to get off that way]
8-pry off the bottom two clips
9-pop in your black badge
10-booyah! go have a
or something.

hmm im trying to get the badge off the front grill right now..im starting with the top clip and it wont come off..and it feels like the badge will crack if i put too much pressure on it with a flat head. any advice on this? should i try heating it up or somethin?
ok, i just did this to the rear emblem. Popped it off with my hand. Used some black spraypaint. let it dry. Then glued it back on. If you look hard, you can tell that its done with spray paint. But from more than 2 feet away, it looks just fine. And I have $25 in my pocket i'm gonna go use on my gf tonite

Re: Painting VW emblems black -- How to ... and what to use (VRsixVW)

just painted both of mine today
rear was easy -- just pops off -- used some 150 grit paper to rough it up and then some 400 grit to smooth it all out -- then used flat black paint
the front was a different story--------i had to take the whole front grill of and sanded the emblem down then masked everything and painted it
looks Schweet

The "black" emblems are really just uncoated black plastic - no fading, no cracking paint, etc. Cleaner, less ghetto and no risk of acid rain eating into the Krylon and washing the color out of the emblem and into your cars paint.
See my tagline for the best reason of all.
