Yes, that's what you do. There are 2 brass clips that really hold the handle in there so what I did was gently manuever a flathead screwdriver in the bottom side of the handle (you will see an indent there), and use it to give me space to slide my nails under. Then I just pulled it out. Sort of work your way around the handle so some of it comes out as opposed to trying to pry it up out of place, you might break something. Good luck.
