Passat 2.8 v6 ATX fuel mileage?

I was just in my mom's 2001.5 passat, 2.8v6, automatic, FWD. I noticed that the trip computer was reporting an average of 12.8 mpg. I was like huh? This car is used mainly for suburban driving but sees extended highway trips at least once a week. My mom also drives with a very light foot, rpm's barely ever see past 2500. Is the trip computer accurate? Cuz that mileage sounds kinda ****ty.

You'll always observe bad fuel mileage when the car just started. Once it gets to working temperature (~190F), you should see the actual numbers.
OTOH, if you see those low numbers all the time, you might have to bring your car in to service or adjust your driving habit (maintain constant speed).

sorry off topic but....hey anarchy are you the same one from Probetalk? i used to frequent there but i havent lately since I was done with the probe and now onto my Passat. I remember you and some other folks jumping on the $99 H&R springs deal that I posted a long time ago on there

Yep, it's me. And I'm still rocking the $99 H&R springs.

I guess you can say I've been sucked into the vortex by my VW owning friends

Anyway, back to the original topic. The car was at full operating temp when it was saying this. I guess we'll have to have it looked at during the next service.

Make sure it's on display 2 (overall mpg) and not display 1 (single-trip mpg).
Also make sure it's on average mpg and not instantaneous mpg.
Also, if you just reset the counter and then took a short trip, it will be very low.
I'm sure there is nothing wrong with the car. The manual explains in detail the different functions and displays of the trip computer.

I have the V6 Tiptronic and my car has averaged 23.15 mpg for 18 tanks of gas and 5160 miles. The computer says an average of 23.75 over the same period. The average speed was 32.7 mph. The car is used for rush hour traffic commuting.
