When reversing out of the garage there is a shrieking noise from the rear. It lasts for about 2m then ok. I have had the front discs and pads changed 2months ago and only the rear pads.
Any ideas what's causing this noise - rear discs perhaps?.

beat me to the kid call....
not 100%, but could your park brake be too tight... so when you first start moving theyare still grabbing??? and then loosen as you drive...
but then again, i ain't a mechanic.
Good luck with it http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Seems to occur only from cold start.

I'd think your suspicions are correct...i.e. the rear brakes.

If its really a "shrieking" sound then its got to be a belt.
Do you only get it in the garage or is it there when you reverse in the street?
If you're only getting it in the garage then I'd investigate at the other end too. Especially check for a slipping belt. Noises in cars almost never come from where you think they're coming from.

Dom,
Have you checked out Passat world about this problem? I seem to recall reading people with similar issue, but I never paid attention since I never experienced this myself..
Hope you sort it out soon, good luck! http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

You could be right about the other end (tie rod ends are suspect on Passats). Belts were changed last Dec at major service. Wife drives mostly and reports that it last occurred this morning, not in garage but when reversing on to the road (10m from garage). No noise once going forward. I will need to drive this car more.
Mike, I will check Passat world as suggested.
Thanks for all replys.

Re: (BRU20VT)

Were the rear's atleast machined? I'd say the discs are the cause. Very similar thing happened to Mum's Golf 2 months ago. And it was the rear discs as they weren't replaced/machined when the brakes were done a month earlier.
... I could be wrong though.... Good luck!
