Re: Passat Tip std 0-60 in 7.8s... do you believe it? (USER)

Car & Driver's performance figure have been suspect for years. Manufacturers have been handing them factory hop ups for road tests since dinosaur days.

I have read other reviews describing the off-the-line accel of the W8 that suggest VW disabled the link from the brake circuit to the drive-by-wire throttle to permit torquing against the brake. That might be a simple mod for the factory, but if used much by owners would smoke the Tip quickly.

I must disagree. Car & Driver has provided quite a bit of consistency in their acceleration tests. They periodically publish their methods. They are usually not the fastest because they leave their testers in driveable condition, but their posted times are usually up there. You might be referring to the 1964 scandal of the Pontiac GTO vs. Ferrari GTO when the Poncho pulled a 13 flat 1/4 mile time and 0-100 in 11.9 secs. Later it was discovered that Royal Oaks Pontiac in Michigan had delivered a ringer for testing. But that is the stuff of legend by now.
I think C & D is subject to similar limitations as other mags when acquiring test cars, as evidenced by VW of America being unable to supply a manual 1.8T Passat for the latest sedan comparison, even though C & D specifically sought a manual. This farce on VW's part affected the outcome of the comparison. Negatively.

Car & Drivers 0-60 times are usually the fastest of any mag since they use rollout for the 0-60 test, just like whats being done on a drag strip. This means the 0-60 time will be 0.3-0.4 seconds faster than when timed from dead rest as other mags and manufacturers do.

If that's what they're doing, then what difference is that from the "Street Start" 5-60 number they also publish??
My understanding is that they start from a dead stop but they aren't shy about using methods such as SAEDave describes to get the engine spun up while holding with the brakes.
The strange thing, it might seem, is that the Street Start time is usually longer than the 0-60 time. I guess that shows how much of a difference the braking/revving method really does make.

In the back of my C & D's in the Road Test Digest they explain the testing method for 0 to 60. Described as a full standing start using the brake to launch auto trannies and clutch dumps/slip to launch manual transmission cars. Whichever method achieves the best launch/ time for each particular car. I'm not sure what you are referring to as a drag strip rollout method. My track, Raceway Park NJ, allows a whole inch of forward movement before the i trip the laser and the clock starts running. Does the time seem a little fast for an auto 1.8T passat? I've run the G/F;s passat one night at the track and come with slightly better 1/4 mile times with a good launch than what was posted in C&D. Of course that was on a cool night, perfect conditions.

C&D's 5-60 mph test is just that: from a 5 mph crawl in first gear they stand on it and shift as they normally would to 60 mph. Times posted are almost always slower than 0-60 because there's no higher rpm launch. Turbo cars are at a disadvantage in the 5-60 mph sprint because of turbo lag (remember - from a 5 mph crawl). It is supposed to be a "real world" acceleration measurement since we don't always do clutch drops in everyday sprints, or so they say.
