i'm sure all of you are into mp3's. i have an mp3 playing head unit in my beater altima which is great (over 200 songs on a cd)
since i do not yet have a cd changer in my R32, i was wondering whats out there besides Phatbox (i hear alot of negative things about it) and the Rio Empeg (which they dont make anymore)
what other alternatives are there to loading up a ton of mp3's without going to a different head unit??
thanks in advance for any info

My Archos mp3 player. Gona hook up the aux behind the headunit to get rid of the tape adapter, and run the power under the center consol

Re: Phatbox, Empeg, DMP3 ... What else is there?

I was considering the Phatbox, but then I looked around online and found the "Dension DMP3 Hard Disk MP3 Player" (http://www.densionusa.com). The company's head office is in Budapest, Hungary: http://www.dension.com. Dension also makes an "ICELink" interface to connect AND control an iPod from your head unit.
The DMP3 apparently uses a standard IDE hard drive (Phatbox has proprietary cartridges) and can accept large drive sizes (>137 GB). You can also order it without a hard drive and install your own.
The DMP3 apparently can be mated to any head unit that supports a CD Changer (or AUX input). (I'm guessing your current HU supports a changer if you're considering the Phatbox). You can control the DMP3 from your CD changer controls (an add on option) or just use the CD changer's audio inputs and control the DMP3 from it's own panel. The DMP3 comes standard with a generic mounting frame for that latter. You can also apparently pop the DMP3 out of the frame and connect it to any house stereo with RCA inputs (the Phatbox requires another separate player unit for indoors).
I wanted a visual display, but I didn't want to replace my OEM non-moonsoon head unit (not yet at least). The Phatbox has no display, it uses a text-to-speech feature to read the song/artist/playlist etc. out to you. Kind of cool - but I don't want to have to wait and listen to a speak-and-spell voice interface just to navigate my song lists
.
Anyway, the DMP3 seems to fit the bill. It has a removable rack mounted drive unit with a display, the option for a wired remote panel (also with a display), and the option for full CD changer control for my stock OEM non-monsoon head unit. If I get a new HU, I can keep the DMP3 and just use the generic mouning frame, or spring for the specific mounting frame for the new HU. (I don't think the Phatbox can do this - but I'm not sure)
I couldn't find anything negative about the DMP3 online - it has at least one satisfied customer: http://forums.techbargains.com...03933 (this link has some nice install photos).
The Phatbox is 899.00CN and the DMP3 (with all the options for my 2000 Jetta) is 710.70US (about 1000.00CN) shipping included (from DensionUSA - you may find it cheaper elsewhere), so I took a chance and ordered one. Hopefully it should be here in about a week or so and I'll post a follow-up once I've had a chance to try it out http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
