I just purchased a H4 Philips HID kit (off eBay). I have a 2000 Jetta with e-codes. Will the HID bulbs be too long for the H4 housing? Also, will the clamp that holds the bulb in place be able to hold the HID bulb and it's larger wiring harness? Last questions, (I believe I know the answer to this one) when installing, will a hole have to be drilled in the back of the headlight cover? This is for Cullen or anybody who is willing and able to answer it, thanks!!! http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: Philips HID questions for Cullen: The Headlight God!!! (InfaRed-V-dub)

ok, is your HID setup a retrofit kit for halogen lamps?
if so, and the Bora lamps use H-4s they should fit w/o any mods to the lamp housing.
if not, you will have to get the correct HID bulbs for you H-4 lamps.
IMHO, I do not like these kits, the pattern is never completely right, resulting in glare for all drivers, including yourself. I used to have this setup myself, and I went back to halogen and I prefer it. Not to mention when drivers who are not in the know complain to the US gov about the intensity of the HIDs and glare...you know who the gov goes to? the OEM HID manufactures, thats who. Then the companies that make the HIDs have to spend more time and money to ans the govs questions, not to mention come up w/ ways to regulate the glare for a lighting system that they never intended to construct.
Sorry, but I am doing this right now at Hella of NA and it sucks. Do us all a favor and buy the true Bosch/Valeo Bora HIDs. The ones I think you have are just for show cars and ricers.
Again, thats MY thoughts about HID light sources and Halogen lamps.

Re: Philips HID questions for Cullen: The Headlight God!!! (InfaRed-V-dub)

you will NEVER get it in the right place cuz there is NO right place in a halogen reflector for a HID light source.
there is so much stray light above the cut-off that it will distract you and others. I had HIDs w/ my euros, they were bad. http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif
and again, the more of you that put these in your lamps, the more work I have to do at work. Im so tired of this.

You obviously know more about this than I do, but I'm hearing so many conflicting stories. For every 3 people who totally hate it, there are 4 or 5 who love it. This is a very opinionated issue. Everybody has thier own perception of the kit. And I thank you for yours. I would like to hear from somebody who actual is pleased with the kit and it's light output.
Thanks

#1. The H4 kit (if a good one?) should fit into the housing without major changes, but due to the thickness of the HID bulb the connecting "assembly" might need a little bending to fit.
#2 About location well HID is right in a way, but you can get the HID bulbs lightsource in the correct place but of course you will NOT get lighting that is comparable to OEM HID except for the color (if you are lucky)
#3 Are you aware of the fact that you will NOT have any HIGHBEAM?
#4 Being that the headlight is of the NON projector type you will have more light output but there might be more risk of glare. You will not be able to remove the glare I mean if you put in the halogen bulb you will see the glare too only the halo bulb is not bright enough to disturb.
I would say the biggest issue is loosing HIGHBEAM!

I am aware of the loss of the Hi-beam. But I'm willing to sacrafice it. I live in a pretty urban area in New Jersey where my lights are the last thing on a cop's mind. Everything from chromed-out/sittin 23's Escalades to 94' dented up Saturns are driving around with blinding/badly focused HID kits!

I think passing on the right is a bigger problem then flashing someone. I hate when people drive in the left lane cuz they are too stubborn to pull over one lane.

Not much need for passing or flashing here...
And in a culture where flashing is not that common as here in estonia or the US it annoys people THOUGH it is a safe practice in places where it is widely "understood" as in scandinavia.

This is exactly true. One reason is that on the H4 halogen bulb, the low-beam filament is shielded to minimize stray light above the cutoff. With HID capsules in place of the H4 bulb you will lose this shield (take a look at an H4 bulb, it's obvious). This will really screw up the light pattern. Not only bad for on-coming vehicles but also bad for the driver of the ill-equipped lights in rain, fog or snow.

Well this is indeed correct I forget that there are alot of companies selling "HID H4" bulbs out there which would only work as a HIGHBEAM bulb, when I was refering to a good kit I was automatically thinking of the ones that have a shield that works in the same way as the LOWBEAM shield on the H4 halogen bulb like this if it doesn't have a shield yes it is not good for anything on public roads.

My kit did not have that shield, so I made my own out of Barq's Root Beer cans!

Of coarse it was not great, so I got rid of the lamps rather quickly. http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif
Now I have halogen rallyes and its all good. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

So the verdict is: if I have the shield, my beam pattern won't be the greatest, but it will be descent? I'm 99% sure the lights have the shield (the lights are being delivered today). The picture I have of the kit, shows the bulbs with a metal shield around them.

right, just make sure that they are aimed correctly and if you are carrying a heavy load, lower your lamps to prevent illuminating the backs of peoples heads!
Oh, and by the way, dont whine when you realize that you dont have hi beams when you really needed them!
