PLEASE HELP! Rear brake problem

477 Views 7 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  PJA
OK, so here's the deal-
Tonight we did the rear brakes on my brother's 99.5 Jetta. The right rear was metal on metal (at 24K), and we had a tough time getting the piston backed in to the caliper (but it was NOT frozen). We got everything back together, and there was no pedal. We pumped it and got varing degrees of pressure, but nothing near what it should be. The fronts are FULLY operable, and the ABS is working in the front (but not the rear).
Does ANYONE have any experience with this? We would HUGELY appreciate it.
My non Vortex brother also thanks you.

Re: PLEASE HELP! Rear brake problem (JettaPat)

uh oh. you could have really done something bad if you didn't know what you were doing (although I am not ssaying that you didn't) How exactly did you get the piston to compress? Did you turn the piston while compressing it?
Re: PLEASE HELP! Rear brake problem (rs4-380)

heres the thing, if you don't reset the piston correctly (i.e. turn the piston while pushing it in) or it you operate the brake pedal while the caliper is not on the disc, you will ruin your self adjusting mechanism in the rear brakes. thats a bad thing.
Re: PLEASE HELP! Rear brake problem (rs4-380)

u need a special tool that compresses the brakes while turning it. I had problems iwth my brakes untill i got a machanic to bring the tool over...then it took like 15 mins to finish up
OK, I've done lots of brakes before, so I know all the basics, like don't hit the pedal with the caliper off the rotor, and that the piston is a screw type and I have the tool and it was screwed in properly.
Now, the parking brake will set, but under normal pedal operation the calipers won't bite.
Any other suggestions?
Re: PLEASE HELP! Rear brake problem (JettaPat)

if the pb is fine then it points to something wrong hydraulically. Sorry if I was too forward in assuming about the other stuff
Re: PLEASE HELP! Rear brake problem (rs4-380)

That's OK, RS.

We just can't figure out where in the hydralics it's messed, you know? They were OK when we put the car up, and we didn't take off a brake hose or line the whole time. We might bleed them tomorrow just in case. Any other ideas?
