ALright, As some of you may know im putting in a low mile JH into my high mileage 85 Scirocco. The Original JH is getting tired so I figured its time for a new one. But while I was at it I figured id upgrade a bit and got and 86 GTI Hydro head and what I was told was a set of 86 GTI high compression 10:1 pistons. Upon recieving the pistons I notcied the invoice said VW 1.8L R/GTI/G/S. Now to my understanding Rabbits, A1 GTI, and Scirocco's had 8.5:1 Compression. I really didnt think anything of it and opened em up. However...when I compared them to the stock pistons I pulled out of the engine they looked exactly the same. I measured the height of the pistons from top to bottom and they were exactly the same. So was the height from the piston pin to the top. As far as I can tell the dishing on the top of the piston looks the same to. So I called up Parts Place Inc. to see if the wrong pistons were sent. The guy told me that that the compression was based on the stroke and that he had a rabbit with 10:1 stock. This isnt true is it? Not only that but when I oped the box one of the piston rings was broke.
I tried to return them but the policy is exchange only. They did say theyd send a set of new rings out right away but im a little worried that a shot good enough to break a ring may have messed up the piston. My Main question is are these the wrong pistons??? The JH's were never 10:1 right?

JH engines were 8.5:1. VW didn't use 10:1 engines until they started using knock sensors.
Re: PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!! I need to know if this is right!!!! (92VdubSLC)

Just go down there and give Parts Place Inc. a kick in the teeth. You've paid good $$$ and deserve what you worked hard for. They should have to deal with the crap they've sent you. I would sent the whole kit back and demand a new replacement. You'r also right about the JH being 8.5:1. with 144mm rods. The 10:1 comp. pistons came on 16v engines. I'm not sure about the rod lengths on the 10:1 16v pistons.
Don't take any ****e from anyone about your car. You'll be the only one crying in the end.
Peace-out.

10:1 came on 85-87 GTI 8v's too, yes??

Parts Place in Aubern Hills MI ? ? If that is what they told you then I will personally go up there and kick all of there arsses. Who did you talk to?? THE STROKE IS THE SAME. I changed from 8.5 to 10:1 and the pistons where definatly different. The dish in the 8.5:1 is much larger than the 10:1. The 8.5's look like a cereal bowl and the 10's look like a small indentation. Gimme his name I'll smack him around, they know not to mess with me there.
If worse comes to worse I have an extra set of TRW rings.

Re: PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!! I need to know if this is right!!!! (92VdubSLC)

Heres an update: They admitted they were the wrong pistons. (like I told em in the first place). Right now there looking to see if they can even GET the 85 GTI pistons. I hope they cant cause I can get a set from porttunning.com for $100 less. Hes supposed to be calling me back in a minute though so we'll see.
Re: PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!! I need to know if this is right!!!! (92VdubSLC)

I never liked there prices, I only by oddball used parts from them. I got some cheep 10:1 pistons from the local import auto store. They cost $180 with rings and rist pins. The pistons were distributed fron "world parts". I thought that the low cost would be an indication of the quality. When I opened the box I was supprised to find that the pistons where of high quality, After a comparison, I deturmaned that these cheep pistons could have been OEM and just "destributed" through world parts. Same thing with my 16v pressure plate from world parts, It was an OEM Valeo.

I tried doing business with Parts Place. Once. Had a horrible experience. Still pisses me off thinking about it 3 years later.
Try to get a refund, the @!$!ed up not you, and order the proper RD-spec 10:1 pistons/rings thru an alternate vendor.

I'm curious as to why you're putting a hydraulic lifter head on? Also, do you know that if you do, you need the higher volume oil pump.

Cause the ticking makes me nuts and I hate adjusting lifters. ALready got the oil pump

Yeah, the ticking thing is a bit annoying, but I've owned solid lifter GTI's for years now, and I find they don't require all that much adjustment. As a matter of fact, I haven't had to change one shim in 2 seasons of racing in my race car. I check them all the time, but I have yet to have to change one.
