Polarized sunglasses, tinted windows, seeing purple squares?

Okay. I have a VW Passat with metallic tint on the windows(solar guard quantum). I just bought a pair of Bolle polarized glasses. When I look through my tinted windows I see this irridescent purple checkerboard on the windows. It appears to be some interaction of the window tint with the polarized glasses, because I only see it with these glasses. Any ideas what is causing this?

hehe...yeah, it's the fact that light refracts in the tint and your polarized lenses show it as a sort-of purplish checkerboard starburst. nothing you can do about it other than stop wearing polarized lenses.
It's funny, though--check out silhouette, transport, and venture windshields--they're purple.
coincidentally, VW windows are naturally 85% tint, and there is a faint pattern visible in them normally.

I noticed that too about the minivans windshield being purple! I saw those minivans and the windshields were purple and I told that to my wife and she was like "uhhhh...okay?". I didn't realize it was my glasses until later. We were in the midwest when I bought the glasses so I thought it was a midwest thing to tint the windshield purple.
Thanks for the info...

The coolest part of polarized sunglasses is that when there is ice on the ground, it shimmers so you can see it better! I call them "The Glasses of Truth."

I've got polarized Oakleys and metallic tint and I get this Psychadelic wave pattern on my windows. Kinda trippy the first time, but now I'm used to it.

Polarized glasses work by only letting in 50% of the light. Light comes in vertical waves, and horizontal waves, polarized lenses only knock out the horizontal waves (thus reducing glare) which is why you are seeing the crazy things you are. I got used to it. Check out a digital watch through your glasses. True polarization, if you turn your watch 90 degrees, all you'll see is a black display. I spend a tremendous amount of time on the water and have been polarized since 98. Wouldn't go back if you paid me.

don't eat the brown acid......

ever see a set of oncoming HIDs thru polarized lenses? That's trippy!

Polorized glasses while on a boat has saved my very expensive outdrive and prop many many many times. When on a boat, you can clearly see the bottom and any shoals you are coming upon.
Polorized sunglasses are great.
